Beavers can convert stream corridors to persistent carbon sinks

When extrapolating across all floodplain areas in Switzerland suitable for beaver recolonisation, beaver-driven carbon burial could offset approximately 1.2–1.8% of the country’s annual carbon emissions, achieved solely through a nature-based solution requiring no active management or direct costs.

Beavers are boosting rare snail populations in Norfolk

At just 2–2.5mm tall, the Desmoulin’s whorl snail (Vertigo moulinsiana) is one of the UK’s most protected invertebrates and is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. With a dispersal rate of less than five metres per year, recovery can be slow.

Abrehart Ecology has monitored the River Wensum area for the snails for 25 years. At Sculthorpe Moor nature reserve: then a graph showing a sharp rise in snail numbers after the beavers arrived.

Beaver wetlands are integral to reinstating dynamic ecological processes that provide refugia for multiple taxonomic groups, supporting taxa otherwise absent from the landscape. Our findings hint at the scale of past biodiversity loss associated with beaver-dependent wetlands, while offering a glimpse of what could be gained from their ongoing population recovery.

Using eDNA to study the biodiversity impacts of beaver activities

Beaver-modified streams supported distinct and, in several respects, more diverse aquatic communities compared to the control stream. Although vertebrate alpha diversity did not differ significantly between spatial groups, overall vertebrate occurrences were higher at beaver sites, with notable increases in amphibian taxa, stickleback, and semi-aquatic mammals such as water vole and water shrew.

The Beaver Trust team recently toured Cropton Forest, led by Cath Bashforth: Species Recovery Officer for Forestry England.

The Cropton Forest Beaver Trial started in 2019, as part of a flood mitigation measure to slow the flow of the river. The beavers have since built England’s largest beaver dam, and began the transformation of the landscape.

The sloping nature of the landscape made it unsuitable for modern forestry machinery. The beavers clearly had no such trouble. On the bank, a large pile of felled trees was just visible - an abandoned beaver lodge. The beavers had since moved their busywork downstream. Around us, evidence of the beavers coppicing work sat low on the forest floor. Gnawed stumps and logs, some old, dark and lichen covered, and some newer, freshly felled, wood.

#BeaversAcrossBritain - what an event! 🦫 We want to thank the speakers who shared their knowledge, our attendees, and those who made the event possible. If you missed the event we will be releasing a selection of talks online soon.

Beavers Across Britian - Science Practice and Policy. Here's a recap of the event.

Ideas, knowledge and experiences were shared in a series of insightful talks on the main stage, from post-mortem pathology to the changes and benefits of urban beaver projects.

In workshops and breakout sessions, attendees had the opportunity to delve deeper into a wide range of topics in beaver restoration.

Whether you wanted to visualise data in innovative ways or better understand the interactions between beavers and infrastructure, there was something for everyone, allowing delegates to discuss complex issues in more depth, challenge perceptions and learn from the experience of others.
