International Cat Day? This is Linda and Derek. They joined the family in February. Linda is named for Linda Ronstadt. Derek was going to be named for David Bowie, but, er, his intellectual gifts indicated in a different direction, so he is named for Jason Mantzoukas's character from The Good Place.

I've never been more this person than when I heard @davidjroth.bsky.social on this week's Distraction making the wild claim that you can get good cherries for two months of the year when everyone knows cherries are good for exactly one week, right around the 4th of July.

Got to make a color chart for a fresh set of watercolors tonight.

On the right, a new tray of Kuretake Gansai Tambi watercolors, 48 colors (pan). From Murderland, the kind of math companies will be doing under the announced new guidelines from the farce that was once the EPA, where air quality controls are determined based on corporate profits not human or environmental health.

#ArtAdventCalendar Day 12. A simple thing, maybe, but one that brings me a lot of joy. I volunteer at an aquarium and got to take home two old octopus jars after a storage area cleanup. I threaded battery operated fairy lights through the holes in the bottoms of them to make them into lamps.

A tall, roughly oval clear glass jar with some protruding shapes near the base and a slightly fluted rim, full of fairy lights, with the battery packs just visible in the background. The jar sits on a dark green stained wooden crate against a peach colored wall. The lights are on.

The jar has a hole in the bottom (not visible in the photo) because it would have been on a rope in the octopus habitat, available for the octopus to squeeze into as part of its enrichment in the exhibit.

I buy myself a piece of original art for my birthday every year, and three of these have been some of those birthday presents. And here's me thinking there is no depravity that can still surprise me in our terrible healthcare system, and then this paragraph comes along. Contracting out 100% of the care of their own patients in their own facility to try to avoid liability.

Name one thing more demeaning to Christianity than calling yourself a Christian and pretending Donald fucking Trump is even in the same zip code as the values espoused by Jesus Christ. You know. Jesus. The radical whose whole 'thing' was lifting up the poor, the sick, the refugees, the down-trodden.
