INVENTION IN GREAT CONVENTION. The practice of maintaining stockpiles of atomic weapons as an integral part of a House's defenses began when primitive nuclear weapons were invited on Old Terra on the eve of the Little Diaspora, by the "Raw Mentat," Einstein, who was working for House Washington. When Einstein succeeded at his attempt to construct these weapons, two of the first were used to settle a trade dispute with House Nippon. These weapons were of such a primitive nature that fewer than a million casualties were caused by the explosions--but one must remember that the entire empire at this time had only three billion subjects, all on one planet. Etsuko, the reporter character from previous scenarios, admired-slash-was obsessed with a horsegirl in her class who always beat her. But the horsegirl gave up racing after losing one (1) school match, so as an adult Etsuko has made a racing scenario that evaluates consistency over one-off wins.

Turn 9: My father, the Great Satan, has committed all of his reserves. The CAF drive for Denver was blunted and their supply lines in Texas disrupted. On the East Coast, Washington DC has fallen, but brave freedom fighters hold the Appalachian Mountains. But in the West, the situation is dire...

The beginning of Turn 9 in "Fortress America." Both blue and red armies have been heavily attrited and are close to breaking. But my American forces are equally bloodied, and the APA has pushed over the Rockies and is poised to race across the Great Plains with armored divisions supported by an intact helicopter force. The game is anyone's to win... or lose.

Turn 5: Turns 5 and 6 are often the nadir of American fortunes—the invading armies still have reserves, while I have spent the entire game taking losses and retreating. My SDI lasers are slowly coming online around the Great Lakes, but they are not yet enough to make a difference.

The board game Fortress America, at the beginning of turn 5. The APA has not yet broken through the Rockies, having had a bad partisan card that forced back a tank column with heavy losses. As America, I had the game-changing "Major Airlift" card the previous turn; that's earlier than I would have liked, but not as bad as it could have been. The card allowed me to rush reinforcements to the beleaguered Denver, under assault from the CAF. On the Eastern Seaboard, the ESP has suffered grievous losses, with the garrisons of the Great Lakes and Northeast flooding south to fill gaps in my line.
