Just a decade ago, 57 percent of Americans expressed "a great deal" or "quite a lot" of confidence in higher education. By 2024, that number had dropped to a historic low of 36 percent. While trust improved slightly in 2025, seventy percent of Americans still say that higher education is heading in the wrong direction. ' It is the purpose of this report to explain why that happened, to assess the current situation, and to chart a path forward.
Our committee identified three immediate factors behind the rise of public distrust. The first involves the soaring price of higher education in the United States, along with the perception that college, graduate, and professional school are no longer worth the money and sacrifice they demand. The second focuses on the college admissions system - specifically, the question of who gets in and why. The third includes an array of issues about what is said and taught on university campuses, including matters of free speech, political bias, and self-censorship. We also found important problems related to trust within the university itself, including concerns that grade inflation, new technologies, and bureaucratic expansion have undermined the university's academic mission.
The range of topics revealed another challenge related to declining trust: widespread uncertainty about the fundamental purpose and mission of higher education. Trust is earned by doing what you say you're going to do -and, ideally, doing it well. In recent years, however, universities have been expected to be all things to all people: selective but inclusive, affordable but luxurious, meritocratic but equitable. Rather than build public support, this diffusion of purpose has contributed to distrust. Without a clear mission and purpose, it becomes difficult to judge whether colleges and universities are living up to their fundamental commitments.

- He openly laid groundwork to challenge the midterms. He claimed our elections were "compromised," clearly setting up the justification to tamper with results before a single vote is counted.
- He said he'll "correct vulnerabilities" in our elections. Translation: he told you exactly what he plans to interfere with.
- He contradicted himself on China in real time. He first claimed China was "working to influence" and "undermining confidence" in him, then said he was doing a "great job" with them back when he made the claim.
He couldn't keep his own conspiracy straight.
- He claimed China rigged the 2020 election, this time by getting journalists to write bad stories about him, because China supposedly wanted Biden to win since Trump was "wise to them."
- He said they found "burn bags" from the Obama Administration full of supposedly incriminating material, without ever saying what was actually in them.
- He said he needs "urgent measures" to stop our elections from being
"hacked," citing Maduro's rigged machines in Venezuela in 2020 as his
"evidence.
- He attacked networks for not airing him live, accusing them of being
"part of the conspiracy to rig elections" and suggesting they should lose their broadcast licenses.
- He announced he wants to seize voter data from states he's deemed
"vulnerable" ahead of the midterms.
This was a sitting president telegraphing, step by step, how he plans to undermine the 2026 midterms with egregious lies and conspiracy

Hi Don; if your father 'loses' we think it is much more interesting if he DOES NOT conceed and spends time CHALLENGING the media and other types of rigging that occurred--as he has implied that he might do. He is also much more likely to keep his base alive and energised this way and if he is going to start a new network, showing how corrupt the old ones are is helpful. The discussion about the rigging can be transformative as it exposes media corruption, primary corruption, PAC corruption etc.

I just want to return to something that you said earlier, which really resonated with me, which is that Donald Trump has actually succeeded in, quote-unquote, securing the border. He's used a lot of tactics that I think are obviously heinous and indefensible. But what's interesting to me is that MAGA can't even accept that as a victory.
Trump constantly says he's reduced border crossings to zero or whatever
-that's a bit of an exaggeration, but it's true that he's gotten them way down. And MAGA can't say to themselves, well, we won on that, we got what we wanted, because they need to feel like they're being invaded by immigrants at all times.

And here's why. Their movement isn't actually just about securing the border. It's about ethnically cleansing the country. They want mass removals. They want to roll back the demographic evolution of this country and reverse-engineer it in some sense. And that's why they can't accept Trump securing the border as a victory, because it doesn't count as ethnic cleansing, which is the thing they really want.
Pinto: Well, you also have to remember that this decision comes on the heels of two other immigration decisions that went in the Trump administration's way. One of them limited access to asylum at the border, and the other allows the Trump administration to end temporary protected status for hundreds of thousands of people.
So the general rhetoric that the world is going to end because we have birthright citizenship is just incorrect. Or that this court is by any means sort of favorable to immigrants because of a birthright citizenship decision that is actually rooted in the Constitution-that's just incorrect.

Sargent: Right. They can't even accept the ending of TPS in effect as a victory, and the ending of asylum in effect as a victory. They want those things, but they don't constitute the dramatic mass removals, the enormous ethnic purging that they really want. I think that's the essence of this.

And I would say that, exactly what you're saying-if you're ending birthright citizenship, there are thousands of children who would have been undocumented and potentially subject to immigration enforcement with their family members. The similarities between Miller's language and that of Buchanan-and others writing in a similar vein-are obvious. Buchanan wrote a 2011 book called Suicide of a Superpower. In a companion column, Buchanan declared that "Western civilization" probably won't "survive the passing of the European peoples whose ancestors created it and their replacement by Third World immigrants." Buchanan lamented the coming extinction of the "white race" and "European peoples" whose ancestors are credited with creating the "civilization that came out of Jerusalem, Athens, Rome and London." Now compare that with Miller's twin claims that if you "import the Third World, you become the Third Worldạand that electing Biden would represent the "assisted suicide of Western civilization." The United States is steward and inheritor of this disappearing civilization: Miller recently declared that "our legacy hails back to Athens, to Rome, to Philadelphia, to Monticello," and is under threat from assorted "enemies" who want to keep us in "darkness." Among those enemies hell-bent on dragging us back into civilizational darkness are immigrants from the Third World and their globalist allies. In those emails to Breitbart, Miller made this clear. After Pope Francis declared in 2015 that the United States should be more open to immigrants who "travel north"-from Latin America-Miller drew parallels to The Camp of the Saints, the 1973 Jean Raspail novel, beloved by white nationalists, that depicts the West as under siege by teeming masses of Third World immigrants, who are depicted in virulently racist terms.
In Miller's formulations relative to Buchanan's, all that's missing is the word "white." To be sure, Miller has adamantly denied ties to explicit white nationalists. But even if you accept that claim, Miller's worldview is still the Buchanan-Francis one, which holds that people from the Third World are fundamentally unfit to partake of the inheritance of Western civilization that is the United States.

Let's return to the fact that Miller's own ancestors were subjected to similar claims: They, too, were deemed unfit to participate in the inheritance of Western civilization that the United States represented at the beginning of the twentieth century. Obviously history disproved this, as does Miller's own story. To use Miller's own frame, this would have to mean that Southern and Eastern Europeans actually did have the cultural genus to carry on the inheritance from Greece and Rome as it was transmitted via (Northern and Western) Europe to Thomas Jefferson's pen in Monticello and the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, whereas today's immigrants do not.

Defenders of Miller might insist this assimilation happened because of post-1920s restrictionism, but the argument at the time was that they-a
"they" that included his own forebears, remember-could not be assimilated at all because they were fundamentally unfit for it. And those immigrants defied such predictions because the United States turned out to have very powerful mechanisms of assimilation. In countless ways, that great migration positively redefined our "civilization," which turns out not to be a static thing. Miller has in essence shifted the civilizational goalposts: If Southern and Eastern Europeans didn't end up threatening U.S. civilization, well, the actual threat lies further afield, in Africa, Latin America, and elsewhere. Miller has simply moved the geographic lines of the civilizational charmed circle, dividing those who are fit to partake in our civilizational inheritance from those who are not.
It's sometimes argued that the 1965 act, by opening us to global immigration, shifted the country's demographics far more than predicted. That's true, but nonetheless, studies have shown that recent waves of immigrants have assimilated just as successfully as previous ones did, and that immigrants embrace American political institutions.
Other empirical work has undermined claims that they're dissolving our social bonds. If you're worried about declining social cohesion, let's talk about soaring economic inequality, weakening civic virtue, declining worker power, and social tensions cynically stoked and manipulated by right-wing elites-all of which Trump is exacerbating.

I measured Alice today. Turns out that if she were about a half inch or so taller, she’d actually be too big to be classified as a miniature horse (at least according to the American Miniature Horse Association).

This book hits me right in the childhood. I found this at a local bookstore. I was on my way out the door and just happened to catch a glimpse of it in the corner of my eye. Everyone should read this book immediately.
