Watched "Pride" this evening… which seemed strangely fitting, on Keir Starmer's last day as Prime Minister. 🏳️‍⚧️ Here's to trans rights.

Mmm. Liz Kendall says a social media ban for under 16s isn't inevitable. In practice it seems unworkable - how do you prove that someone is over 16? My guess is that we'll end up with major players being able to claim sufficient oversight and good enough quality age verification.

Anyone following the way this debate has
developed at Westminster over the past year may think that a social media ban for under 16s is inevitable.

Within months, the government has gone from saying a ban would be unworkable to sounding on the verge of implementing one.

But, in interviews this morning, Liz Kendall, the technology secretary, stressed that this was nota done deal. She told the Today Programme:
"We do think it's right to have a consultation on whether or not to ban social media for the under-16s Lots of people have made up their minds, Lord
Nash (the Tory peer who tabled the amendment that led to the government defeat in January) included.
But let me just say this. There are
organisations, including the NSPCC and the Molly Rose Foundation and the Internet Watch Foundation, who are worried that a ban wouldn't solve the problem because it would just force some of this stuff deeper [into the dark web], that the children would try and get around it, that it would create a cliff edge at 16. So I think it is the right and responsible thing to do to have a consultation."

debate scheduled for tomorrow, which means
they get to choose the motion before the
Commons. Sam Coates from Sky News says
they may use it to force a vote on disclosure
of vetting information relating to Peter
Mandelson.
* Could we see a crunch point as soon as
tomorrow over Mandelson?

they're thinking about it
*Labour MPs tell me they COULD Vote for it.
They don't think they can block transparency
about Mandelson

gets rid of the ginger guy, we will go for it" said
one Labour MP.
* Other Labour MPs are circling the wagons to
protect McSweeney for getting Labour in
government

Also, why is this entirely manufactured panic the most important thing for Labour to focus their "competence" upon? Wouldn't it be better to focus on stuff that actually matters, and to minimise this Reform talking point?

“We need to demonstrate competence, and that’s most obviously around small boats,” he says. “But the government also needs to demonstrate and expose that Reform do not speak for the British public on immigration. I think on that latter one, we’ve not done that enough. We should go harder on that.”

Ooh, he's actually on here… Joe, you make out in this oddly substance-free interview that @zackpolanski.bsky.social thinks that a wealth tax will pay for "everything"; obviously this is untrue. As pressure from the Greens mounts, what will Labour's eventual wealth tax look like?

A wealth tax – an annual levy on the assets of the super-rich, which Polanski strongly backs – “won’t solve the kind of fiscal challenge that we face,” Dromey says. “We won’t be able to fund the public services that we need just by a wealth tax that affects the top 0.1% of the population.”

He adds: “The idea that squeezing a tiny elite of billionaires will pay for everything that we want and everything that we need is fantasy and we do need to expose that.”

David Lammy explains (on Twitter, in 2020) why it would be "a[n] historic mistake to limit [jury trials] now." "There is an inevitable risk that once jury trials are suspended for certain crimes, they will never come back." Wise words, David Lammy.

The right of an individual to “the lawful judgment of his equals” was enshrined in the Magna Carta of 1215.

Jury trials form part of the bedrock of our democracy.

It would be a historic mistake to limit them now.

The crown court backlog stood at 37,000 cases before the crisis, and the Government did not consider restricting on jury trials.

The backlog is now around 41,000 and the prospect is being raised.

Why is this change proportionate now?

Replacing juries with a judge and two magistrates would reduce the diversity of those making life changing decisions about guilt.

As the #BlackLivesMatter movement makes its voice heard, it would be wrong to ignore the reality of unconscious bias in our justice system.

There is an inevitable risk that once jury trials are suspended for certain crimes, they will never come back.

The Government should not drop the high standards of jury trials in the face of a challenge, but instead look at creative measures and reforms to meet it.

A little aside in Pygmalion / My Fair Lady (1912), is how the working class father, having found himself with a bit of money, ends up welcomed by the upper classes rather than the middle classes. I often wonder about this class dynamic.
