Well done France! Compassion wins. Across Europe and the wider world, more and more democracies have concluded that terminally ill people deserve the choice of a compassionate, safeguarded assisted death. The momentum is impossible to ignore.

Freedom of religion or belief protects everyone, including humanists and anyone who dissents from the state-sanctioned religion. It protects the right to convert, to leave a religion, to criticise one, or to hold none at all.

Blasphemy laws can NEVER be justified. They're used to ban words or symbols that are 'offensive' to religion. They're used to violently suppress and attack religious and non-religious minorities worldwide. Laws against blasphemy are incompatible with freedom of expression, thought, and protest. 🧵

A worrying pattern is emerging: falling pupil numbers being used to justify school reorganisations that close or merge schools of no religious character into faith schools. That may cut places, but it can permanently remove inclusive local provision and leave families with fewer genuine choices.
