On Tuesday evening, friends of Sir Keir had told several news outlets his job might be under immediate threat and that they were particularly suspicious of Streeting's leadership ambitions.

Speaking to the BBC on Wednesday, the health secretary said he could "not see any circumstances under which I would do that to our prime minister".

There are many things Tim Shipman, the Spectator, & I disagree on. However, his advice to Labour MPs re candidates (posted on X) is something they should ALL be considering. Sooner rather than later. It’s the kind of q’s I wished they’d paused & reflected on BEFORE meltdown, but we are where we are😳

Having seen this show multiple times, MPs will be asking themselves "can I get a better job?" And "will the new leader swing the way my heart desires?" Labour MPs will do themselves and the country a favour if they use their heads and ask every leadership contender these questions:

1) What is your plan? Not the vibes or the direction of travel. The actual policies they will prioritise

2) How will you communicate this plan to the voters? (MPs ask yourself if the candidate is a good communicator because without that they are lost)”

Today I am in complete agreement with Alastair Campbell’s post from ‘the other place’. All these PLP members talking about “not playing games” & Starmer’s lack of strategy,whilst engaging in a press led feeding frenzy, failing to do strategic analysis & pissing around 2 days before the Kings speech

The UK is very vulnerable to real world impact from bond markets & economic shocks. If people don’t understand Starmer’s sense of duty to UK citizens & a key reason he has repeatedly tried to give bond markets confidence in his staying & stave off higher borrowing costs... then maybe have a think.

I mean, when you see it like this it’s not like Labour Govt have done nothing, as you would guess from some commentators & Opposition parties statements. One may not hv liked the Labour manifesto, or not voted for it, but they seem to be making good progress on the legislation promised within it.

The feedback John refers to in his article from his recent book tour - about autism not being linear - is an issue many autistic people wish was understood widely. It’s recognised by the best of autism specialists but not understood by many in media, govt or GPs etc. Think ‘spidergram’ not line 😊👇

“Autism spectrum: it’s a circle not a line” illustration showing autism can be visualised by a spidergram or a wheel with segments each referring to different elements of autism eg executive function, perception, social difficulties etc etc. All autistic people with or without intellectual or learning disabilities will have variations in these aspects which will provide their unique challenges and strengths. Autism is not a linear diagnosis from “mild” to “profound”. Eg. Someone who can’t verbalise may have less sensory issues than someone who can speak, and both might have high executive function challenges.

An illustration on how autism is not linear from “not very autistic” to “very autistic” but can be more accurately visualised as a spidergram - imagine spokes on a wheel. Each spoke is a different ‘factor’ eg executive function, communication, sensory processing etc.

Dear Secretary of State,

Re: Mental Health Diagnostic Review – Omission of Lords Autism Act Report and Incorrect Framing of Neurodevelopmental Conditions

I am writing to express serious concern that your newly announced review of mental health diagnoses, Autism and ADHD https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/ce8q26q2r75o.amp makes no reference to the recent House of Lords Autism Act Select Committee Report (Time to Deliver November 2025 https://ukparliament.shorthandstories.com/autism-act-special-inquiry-lords-report/index.html?), despite it being the most comprehensive and authoritative review of autism policy in over a decade.

The "Time to Deliver" report highlights systemic discrimination, severe resource shortages, and makes clear that autism is not over-diagnosed. It is therefore extremely troubling that the review announced by you today appears to ignore both its evidence and its recommendations.

Your announcement repeatedly groups “mental illness, autism and ADHD” together, suggesting they form a single diagnostic or clinical category. Autism and ADHD are neurodevelopmental conditions, not mental health conditions. When autistic or ADHD people experience mental health difficulties, these are most often the result of discrimination, trauma, exclusion, and a lack of appropriate support—precisely the issues the Lords report identifies.

By conflating mental health with neurodevelopmental disability, today's announced review is framed in a way that risks undermining scientific accuracy, statutory obligations under the Autism Act, and the findings of Parliament itself. It also contradicts the Lords Committee’s explicit warnings that misunderstandings of autism within public services—including treating it as a mental health condition—are major drivers of harm, misdiagnosis, and barriers to support.

I am further concerned by the appointment of Sir Simon Wessely as vice-chair of this review. His involvement in the widely discredited PACE trial for ME/CFS—which used flawed methods, changed outcome measures mid-study, and contributed to harmful clinical advice & discrimination of people with ME/CFS —raises legitimate worries about whether this review will adequately protect disabled and neurodivergent people from similar errors.

I therefore request clarification on the following points:

Why was the House of Lords Autism Act Select Committee Report not referenced or incorporated into the framing of this review?

Will the Government explicitly confirm that autism and ADHD are neurodevelopmental conditions, not mental health conditions, and ensure the review reflects this?

How will the review avoid replicating the methodological and ethical failures seen in the PACE trial which led to severe & lasting harm to people with ME/CFS
How will DHSC integrate the Lords Committee’s recommendations—particularly on resources, discrimination, and statutory duties—into autism and ADHD policy going forward?

Given the potential for negative consequences, discrimination and severe harm for autistic, ADHD and disabled people, it is essential that this review begins from accurate definitions, appropriate evidence, and respect for the findings of Parliament.
