On Trans Day of Visibility, our committee reflects on the day, and how this year it feels very different, in the wake of the Supreme Court ruling, among other very well documented attacks on our community. lgbtiqa.greenparty.org.uk/2026/03/31/r...

In a bygone era, it was a day where our trans siblings would rejoice, because they finally have a day to be visible. For some, it’s a great day to finally come out to family members - a day to share who they are and to celebrate joy in being themselves, free from parental or societal expectations.

This year, it feels very different. Visibility, it would appear, is a double-edged sword. The same visibility that brings us joy is the same visibility that has made us a target of vitriol and hate, and the subject of political points-scoring. The same visibility that shines a light on our community and our struggles brings us news article after news article, desperately and zealously pushing the public to turn on their peers.

Trans Day of Visibility has become talked about by mainstream politicians, media outlets and institutions, and the consequence is that the day is hollowed out. Some politicians, media outlets or institutions might have good intentions, but a deeply rooted suspicion now exists within the trans community that when it comes to trans rights, it’s a matter of when, not if, the betrayal comes."

Some of our committee members have spent the lead-up to Trans Day of Visibility desperately trying to prevent a motion brought to Darlington District Council that seeks to use the Supreme Court ruling to justify a ban on some women entering women's spaces. Visibility was not the reason for this attack - prejudice is, though sadly visibility can mean we feel the impact of these attacks more.

As a newly elected committee, on Trans Day of Visibility, we re-affirm our commitment to trans rights. Our trans, non-binary and intersex peers massively depend on the ability for our elected politicians in Council and Parliamentary chambers to deliver for LGBTIQA+ people. 5,000 members! As @greenparty.org.uk has broke over 215,000 members, we've discovered that we're now past 5,000 members in the LGBTIQA+ Greens. Our growth has been incredible over the last year, growing to at least double our previous size. Here's to many more members!

A statement on the High Court ruling and the recent guidance from the Department of Education regarding trans youth.

Our AGM and @transgreens.bsky.social Interim Committee last week voted to leave X/Twitter. It is quite simply untenable to continue as we were, in the backdrop of everything going on.

We voted to indefinitely suspend use of X.

It is pointless to campaign for trans and queer liberation on a website where the only way to be heard is to open yourself to harassment.

Trans Greens' and LGBTIQA+ Greens have voted to indefinitely suspend their use of X/Twitter. Some of our reasons include:

Cross-posting content from our other social media accounts is inhibited by language policing unique to X/Twitter's version of "free speech", for example being flagged by the site for using words such as "cis" (a scientific term to refer to people who aren't trans).

Algorithmic biases, which encourage us to be needlessly controversial to be seen, and which disproportionately benefit right-wing narratives, which results in an experience that is hostile to the mental health of our volunteers and can result in burnout for those involved.

Deeply problematic changes to Grok: many news agencies have reported that people are using Grok to sexually harass women and girls by undressing them using AI. xAI paywalling features to generate deepfakes instead of removing the ability to create them is not an acceptable response to sexual abuse.

There is a concern that any media of our members (especially committee members) will be used to harass them.

We were promised a draft bill on banning conversion practices by the end of 2025 and it's mid-December with no movement. This government *must* commit to a trans-inclusive ban, especially following a report by the BBC into practices fifty years ago.

Conversion practises are abuse. They must be banned. A recent BBC documentary has been released - "Shock Therapy", which documents the abuse by the NHS of LGBTIQA+ youth back in the '60s and '70s.

The series reveals that shock "therapy" was used against LGBTIQA+ people in the 1960s and 1970s as a way to try and "cure" people of their sexual orientation or gender identity. At least 250 people were subject to this treatment in 1974 alone.

It was reported at the time that those who are now survivors of conversion practises took part of their own accord, but survivors and historians are now questioning whether genuine consent was ever given. Many have said that the consent sought would not stand up to modern ethical standards surrounding medical consent and treatment.

The government must issue a formal apology to those who experienced this awful treatment, while there are still survivors around to hear that apology.

In 2025, people are still subjected to conversion practises. Some operate under the guise of religion or culture, while some still remain deeply ingrained within the NHS. The services replacing GIDS pathologize trans youth and impose barriers to care, which are conversion practises in all but name.

For a decade, governments have promised to end conversion practises. In 2025 the Labour government promised a draft bill by the end of the year. It's yet to appear. A ban on conversion practises must now happen, and be trans-inclusive. It's clear now, 50 years later what harms these practises have had on its survivors.

We must learn from history, and we must let it guide us on how we approach policy on LGBTIQA+ people. We must not let the current culture war stand in the way of doing something fundamentally good. We owe it to survivors to finish what was promised: ban conversion practises.

I remember dropping an obscene amount of hints as a kid. I'd get what felt like unsupportive comments from my parents back then. My northern village was one where everyone knew everyone else, so to experiment I'd know I'd have been met with bullying, and my parents would know.

I don't feel it was much of a surprise when I eventually texted them. It felt that was probably safer than in person, and losing control of the situation.

I remained closeted for almost a decade. I was too afraid to think what would have happened if I came out as trans to my parents. Even after I moved out, things happened in my life that never made me feel secure and safe enough to do so.

These days, things are amazing. I now find myself feeling confident to do things, sometimes things I never felt I could once do. I'm involved in politics now, as a committee member of the LGBTIQA+ Greens.

Not a day goes by where I think "where would I be right now had I not taken the leap?". I shudder to think. Those were the dark times. If an employer ever asked "where do you find yourself in 10 years time" I'd just awkwardly laugh. The concept of "being around" for my thirties felt alien and wrong way back then. It doesn't now.

It's National Coming Out Day!

The first time I tried to come out at 19 my mum convinced me to not do it because it would be hard and I would "be an ugly girl" which really hurt me.

I [didn't look after] myself and seeing that I wasn't looking after myself as a reason to not come out. As my weight got higher my mum's words seemed more real, as my hair got worse my mum's words seemed more real. I was only living as I knew dying would be hard on others.

I went into a panic that lasted several days and I decided even if it costs me everything- I need to do it.

Since then I have come out to everyone, I've been looking after myself and dropped from nearly 400lbs to 250lbs. I have been able to see myself and love myself for the first time in years. I live for myself now not just for others. I feel so proud of how far I've come.

One of our stories of coming out is from Jordan, which really hammers home the importance of embracing trans kids and believing them. Not doing so can be massively damaging. It's #NationalComingOutDay, and we're asking members to share their stories of coming out.

I came out to my whole family as Bi and Trans a couple of years after transitioning around three years ago.

They were supportive of me as an adult, but the conversation brought back a lot of history.

They asked when I knew and I told them when I was 13, my dad originally denied it and refused to speak to me until I pretended it was a joke. It was kept secret from everyone else.

A week or two after coming out again, my parents separated, as my mum couldn't forgive my dad for causing such pain.

Leaving home gave me the space to unpack that pain, embrace my truth, and finally live authentically.

I’m so much happier now and I’ve learned that denying someone’s identity only causes harm for everyone involved.

I'd started to come to terms with being trans just under a year before the day I finally actually stepped out the door presenting as a woman. In that time I'd got a job in Japan, so moved to Tokyo. I had made a trans friend who had also just moved there, and we made plans to go to a music festival around Sibuya. I painted my nails in trans flag colours, because I was gonna own my transness.

I got to Shibuya and met my friend by the famous crossing, where I told her this was the me I had wanted her to meet two months ago. I did the most tourist-y thing for the very first picture of the real me, got a photo with Hachikou, the dog statue, before we went to enjoy the music.

I was more sociable than I had ever been in my life, chatting to strangers in the bar, half the musicians, everyone. I had one particularly memorable encounter in the last bar, an Australian woman started talking to me, and as we got talking I told her I was trans and today was day one of being out. Her immediate reaction was to hug me, and tell me that I was going to love being a woman.

I was in the car with my mum, aged about 12/13, and I said "I have to tell you something". She replied "Is it about Kate? That you like her?" regarding a girl in the year above who I liked. Somewhat took the wind out of my sails that she figured it out!

I can't actually remember coming out to her as trans tbh. She's always been super supportive.

I came out as bi at 27 by posting it on Facebook. I figured nobody would care, but it was National Coming Out Day so why not? Then my mum told me off because my grandma saw it and said I should have discussed it with them. My dad never acknowledged it and she's never mentioned it since.
