Any merit in the drivel I write comes from learning painstakingly how to write essays.
To assay - to test - exactly what I thought and knew about a matter.
Great essayists - Woolf, Orwell, Bacon, Montaigne, Hazlett - are utter intellectual joys as you read how they test themselves on topics too.

The question I ask with any article is: what do I actually know and think about this topic?
Essay = assay.
This means sometimes my final piece is different to what I thought it would be.
"What is your angle?" I am sometimes asked before filing.

So essays - like other ways of testing knowledge and understanding - should not yield to Al slop.
But they are vulnerable, because of the nature of the medium.
A wise student, however, should see an essay question as an opportunity to explore, and not a chore to complete.

Claude just described a piece of code as "a bit fragiguous", a word that does not exist anywhere on the internet according to google.

I don't think that's correct, at least for most of the major foundational model LLMs these days.
There is a process for chunking-up/tokenizing that is dependent on context, language, surrounding words, etc, in order to avoid having to have a token for every character.
