I like a lot of U.K. Subs singles but not a fan of their albums. Other than “Party in Paris”, one of my favorite songs they ever did, it’s just generic ‘80s British hardcore. Captain Sensible played keyboards on this, apparently, but I can’t really tell. DIMINISHING RETURNS, more like it!
Last 2 of the ESP-Disk blind box & my least favorite. Free jazz so cliched & self-indulgent, it brings out my inner Stanley Crouch. Tiger Hatchery slightly more cromulent. Kudos to Radical Empathy Trio’s Nels Cline for continuing to be a total weirdo outside of Wilco.

I know I make fun of bad budget greatest hits comps a lot, but the Verve and Prestige 2 LP sets are usually plentiful in used bins and good intros to early jazz artists who never recorded with an eye to the album format. Although sometimes the cover art leaves something to be desired.
When I’m wrong, I admit I’m wrong… Johnny Hartman’s album with John Coltrane is amazing. Took me way too long to realize it. This one only suffers because John Coltrane isn’t on it.

I’m not going to say this is the Sonny Rollins album anyone should start with (or even the tenth), but even on a record like this, his creativity and restlessness shine through. And the short ballad, “Illusions”, is a sweet ballad.
