the new crosswalk on Young Street, photo not taken by me but shared with permission. The issues have been referred to 311 but even with the uneven surface and paint resolved, this does not look at all safe

$Statement on behalf of Paul Nopper, CAO of the Town of Lunenburg, regarding Taxi by-law infraction On the afternoon of July 16, Bylaw Enforcement identified a driver with SaltWind Transportation Service illegally operating without a taxi driver's license in the Town of Lunenburg. This was confirmed through communication with the driver. Bylaw Enforcement noted the infraction and contacted the owner to educate on the situation and to gain compliance under the bylaw. The owner became confrontational through the course of the discussion with Bylaw Enforcement. Upon completion of the conversation, Bylaw Enforcement had de-escalated the situation. Shortly after, the owner came to Town Hall and was extremely confrontational with frontline staff. Upon which, the owner voluntarily resigned all of his taxi licenses and left Town Hall. The resignation of the taxi licenses was in no way prompted or encouraged by Town staff or Council and entirely voluntary on the part of the owner. At this time, SaltWind Transportation Service is no longer licensed under Lunenburg’s Taxi bylaw. The Town of Lunenburg promotes a safe and respectful workplace for all employees and does not condone the actions that were taken against staff today. Horrible situation for those involved and the many who depend on a transportation service in this town

Post from Saltwind: This is slander at this point. The By law officer confronted one of our employees who had recently picked up another employee to move her across town. There was no fare exchanged and thus no violation of the by-law.

We will be looking at legal action against the town. Shame on you Lunenburg.

some good responses to this on Reddit. Councillors consistently point to Provincial responsibilities and issues. But key causes causing danger and harm are municipal jurisdiction

I can understand that red light cameras could add to safer driving, if enforced. But, is the main cause of city driver/pedestrian collisions drivers going through red lights? I suspect many relate to turning and ignoring pedestrians in crosswalks.

If that’s the case, could this be an indicator of councillors being “out of step” with actual pedestrian safety issues versus other vehicle safety issues?

About 20-30 minutes ago my daughter was struck by a car exiting a driveway on the Bedford Highway near the bottom of Meadowbrook. She was on the sidewalk with her bike, and as she passed the driveway he pulled out and hit her. She said she looked before she went in front of him, that he was stopped but was not looking at her cause he was using his phone. She was hit hard enough to fall from her bike, her knee is sore but she seems to be okay. She said the driver was trying to say something to her as she was on the ground, but another driver behind him was honking repeatedly for him to move and he drove off.

To the man who hit my daughter, GET THE HELL OFF YOUR PHONE WHEN YOU’RE DRIVING!!!! My daughter is lucky that she was able to walk away from this today but it could’ve been a lot worse. The lives and safety of other people are more important than your damn text or call or social media post!! You’re lucky she was too shaken up to think to take a picture of your plate.

And to the car honking behind the man who hit my daughter, have some damn consideration for the people around you! I think my daughter’s wellbeing is more important than wherever you were in such a rush to go. Did you maybe think to stop and help? Or were you too busy honking to even realize the reason he was stopped in front of you was because he hit a CHILD?!

People need to do better cause the next time things could be much worse!!!

School zone safety has been identified as a priority by Council and the community. There are current and future
programs aimed to create safe streets around schools in the municipality. As children have less experience as
road users, it is critical to create a safe environment while travelling to and from school. Safe school zones also
create conditions for children to actively travel to school, gaining valuable physical activity and creating healthy
active travel habits from an early age. Safe school streets as well as the Active School Transportation Program

Road safety isn’t an abstract issue, it’s one of the top concerns I hear from residents across Halifax and in District 11.

This week, I had the privilege of opening the CARSP/ACIP Road Safety Conference, bringing together experts from across the country working to prevent injuries and save lives. The range of issues from pedestrian and cycling safety to ATV use and impaired driving, reflects exactly what residents are raising with me every day.

I have deep respect for the professionals leading this work; their expertise and commitment are critical to safer communities.

The opening keynote by GuysWork stood out, exploring how cultural attitudes—especially around masculinity and risk—shape road safety outcomes. It was thought-provoking and deeply relevant.

It also hit close to home. In District 11, we’ve lost young men to motor vehicle accidents—tragedies that ripple through families, friends, and entire communities. It’s a reminder that road safety isn’t just about infrastructure—it’s about behaviour, culture, and how we support our youth.
Important conversations, and important work ahead.

I’m very proud of the grassroots work being done in District 11 to address these issues, and can’t mention road safety without giving a shout out to Safer Steps Chebucto Sometimes it does take a village.

I will continue to be a strong advocate for road safety - including photo radar, stronger enforcement, traffic calming, and education and awareness. Please report issues, obey the law, and help make our community a safer place for everyone.
