I went back to the book to check the price, but it had been - professionally - written in pencil so it could be erased without damaging the book. So maybe the price was £30? But I was on the dole, which was basically £30, plus a few hours work as a barman. Rent in my bedsit (not a flat) was £24. 1/2

I'm having a drink in The Last Hurrah in homage to one of my favourite writers, Edwin O'Connor. He was rightly recognised as one of the greats 60 years ago, and is now utterly forgotten. His masterpiece is THE EDGE OF SADNESS, truly a great Irish novel.
