He did not ask Xiao Xingchen why he was inside a stranger's home. He didn't ask what led to the stranger, dead on the bathroom floor, the blood seeping into the grout. That was going to be a bitch to get out.

The wind brought with it a howl and a sheet of ice, making the boy flinch, clutching at the man by his side, as if to protect him from the onslaught. It was useless. The man's pulse was weak, his breath barely inflating his lungs. He had very little time.

"It's my fault. I'm to blame. I must make it right, please," Xiao Xingchen said, pink, watery blood welling up in his eyes. "Please, if you will save him, I'll—"

"You have nothing to offer me," Baoshan Sanren said, cutting off his pleading.
