My name is Alison, and I am an independent documentary filmmaker. I am currently producing a feature documentary called Our Voice, which explores the lives of
transgender people across the United Kingdom. For many years, conversations about transgender people have taken place in newspapers, on television, online and in politics. Yet the people whose lives are being discussed are often given the least
opportunity to speak for themselves.
Our Voice aims to change that. This documentary is about people, not headlines. It is about everyday life, relationships, family, work, hopes, fears, humour, resilience and the ordinary moments that make us who we are. My goal is to
create an honest, thoughtful and compassionate film that allows transgender people to tell their own
stories in their awn words I am looking for trans people from all walks of life. Whether youre young or older, men women or however you identify, politically active or not, your story matters. I am interested in hearing about your
life as you have lived it. If you have ever wished that people could better understand what life is really like for transgender
people in the UK today, I would love to hear from you.

It’s would be so wrong if people to flood the EHRC’s whistleblower email with false reports of scary people taking a pee… So so wrong, so I would definitely not recommend anyone does. And definitely wouldn’t recommend anyone does it with a private relay on their email address.

But the "worst PM ever" and fury he's faced is insanely disproportionate and shows how vulnerable Labour PMs are to disinfo campaigns if they don't ace govt.

Dear Andrew,
Thank you for your detailed reply.
I appreciate the time you have taken to explain your position and | welcome your reaffirmation that trans people deserve dignity, safety and protection under the law.
What I struggle to reconcile is your conclusion.
You state that the present situation is unacceptable, that trans people are experiencing understandable anxiety, and that the Supreme Court judgment must not be used to justify an erosion of rights. Those are points on which we agree.
Yet the proposed EHRC guidance does exactly that. It proposes excluding trans people from facilities associated with both sexes, leaving many effectively excluded from public life and requiring them to disclose their trans status simply to use a toilet or changing room. That is not a theoretical concern. It has immediate consequences for employment, education and participation in society.
You explain that you chose not to support the
EDM because of the tone adopted by some campaigners. I find that deeply disappointing. An Early Day Motion should be judged on its content, not on the conduct of every individual who supports the wider cause.

I also detect an implication that trans rights campaigners are principally responsible for the poor conduct surrounding this debate. While a small number of passionate individuals have undoubtedly reacted negatively on social media, they do not represent the wider community. In contrast, every trans person I have spoken to has experienced personal abuse, both online and, more worryingly, in person. Many have described verbal abuse, harassment and physical assault.
Those experiences deserve equal recognition when discussing the tone of this debate.
Further, I have witnessed sustained transphobic abuse directed at this small community, including dehumanising language, calls for exclusion from public life and, in some instances, rhetoric that normalises or appears to encourage harassment and violence. That hostility deserves equal recognition when discussing the tone of this debate.
Parliamentarians are elected to make decisions based on evidence and principle. Refusing to support a motion because some people in a wider debate have behaved badly risks punishing the very community whose rights you say you wish to defend.

You refer to the need for calm discussion and compromise. I support respectful debate. What l cannot accept is the suggestion that a minority should wait for its rights to be protected until public discourse reaches an acceptable standard.
The suffragette movement did not secure votes for women through polite consensus alone.
Throughout history, social progress has often been accompanied by anger and frustration from those denied equal treatment. Rights are not conditional on the behaviour of others. What you describe amounts to punishing the many for the actions of the few.
I am also concerned by the assertion that the Supreme Court reaffirmed trans people's protections. While protection from discrimination formally remains in the Equality Act, guidance that permits widespread exclusion from everyday facilities significantly weakens those protections in practice. A right that cannot be exercised is of limited value.
This is not an abstract constitutional debate. It is about whether trans people are able to go to work, travel, access public services and participate in everyday life without fear of exclusion or humiliation. Those are practical freedoms that should exist for every citizen.
I hope you will reconsider your position and lend your support to measures that provide immediate protection for trans people while any wider review of the Equality Act or Gender Recognition Act takes place.

Lib Dem MP who withdrew his name from the EDM against the EHRC guidance Says it was only added as a clerical error..🙄 And then goes on to victim blame the trans community for fighting back against the abuse it gets. @libdems.org.uk blaming the trans community for being attacked. Not a good luck.

Thank you for taking the trouble to write to me about the proposed EHRC guidelines and the Early Day Motion on it.
I agree with you, and share your disappointment the uncertainty about the practical implications of the Supreme Court's judgment on the Equality Act 2010 remains and is clearly causing such deep concern. Following the High Court's rejection of the Good Law Project's challenge to the interim EHRC guidance, it is evident that many practical consequences remain unsettled.
This can only be satisfactorily settled in a reasoned environment, where those leading or most engaged in the debate create a safe space to enable calm assessment of the facts to find a workable and agreeable way forward. I'll come back to that...
I also agree with you that the present status will remain unacceptable so long as trans, non-binary and intersex people continue to face understandable anxiety about what this means in their everyday lives. At the same time, employers, service providers and public bodies tell us they lack clear, workable guidance on how they are expected to meet their responsibilities under the law.
For many years now, women and trans people have been caught in the crossfire of increasingly divisive culture wars. Recorded hate crimes have more than doubled in the last five years, compounding structural inequalities in employment, healthcare and public life.
It is sometimes overlooked that the Supreme Court reaffirmed that trans people's rights remain protected in law. It's important that that principle is upheld. The judgment should not be deliberately misinterpreted or used to fuel division or to justify the erosion ofrights. My Liberal Democrat Parliamentary colleagues and I will continue to press for this.

My Liberal Democrat Parliamentary colleagues and I have called for the establishment of a joint, cross-party committee of MPs and peers to undertake post legislative scrutiny of both the Gender Recognition Act and the Equality Act 2010. This should include taking evidence from those affected by these laws and should be empowered to recommend amendments or further legislation where necessary to ensure that existing rights are properly safeguarded.
Our Liberal Democrat Spring Conference last year reaffirmed our commitment to LGBTQ+ rights, addressing challenges constructively and compassionately. Our policy position, which you may find helpful, is set out here: Free to be who you are.
Some have reasonably asked why it appears that I have
"withdrawn" my name from one of thousands of Early Day Motions which have been tabled this Parliament. The answer is more mundane than you may expect. It was a simple clerical error. I had mistyped a number into the EDM search engine and signed the wrong EDM, and then immediately corrected that mistake a few moments later. I never intended to sign the EDM. To have made the mistake on a matter which has become so politically toxic as this one is of course extremely unfortunate!
You may ask why I wouldn't sign the EDM, given that I've always strongly supported all anti-discrimination measures and have said what I say above? Some have raised the spectre of the rise of the religious right following their failure to avert gay marriage - something I strongly supported, by the way. No, I've not changed my allegiances, and am still just as determined to combat discrimination in all its forms.
The reason I'm discouraged from backing this EDM is because I must find some method of expressing my extreme disappointment with the manner in which this matter has been and is debated, and the behaviour of many who have damaged their own cause through adopting unhelpfully vitriolic and offensive name-calling, to toxify the discourse to a point where rat…

I do not believe any sustainable and workable solutions will ever be found while those who appear - to me - more motivated to see the vanquishing of their adversaries than in helping our society to find a solution to an admittedly difficult conundrum dominate the discourse. All of this creates an unhealthy
and unhelpful environment to work towards a satisfactory and sustainable resolution. Until those who dominate this debate can move beyond the vitriol and to find a way to engage in a calm, good faith discussion about how best to combat discrimination and bigotry to ensure safety, dignity and fairness for all, I'm afraid I must use these admittedly miniscule protests to show that I believe that progress will unfortunately be prevented while the conduct of the discourse remains as it is.
I appreciate you will not agree with my position. Some have said they will switch their vote (which will only indirectly aid the far-right).
However, I hope you will at least appreciate that I have considered the issues carefully and that, while we may disagree on tactics and strategy, we agree on principle.

What happened to happened to Alan Turing? He was treated with the same DIGNITY AND RESPECT your government is showing trans people today. Oh yes that was it, he to was persecuted because he was LGBTQ and took his own life, something that happens to a lot of trans people.

Alan Turing died of cyanide poisoning on 7 June 1954 at the age of 41, following years of severe government persecution for his homosexuality. While his brilliant codebreaking work at Bletchley Park helped defeat Nazi Germany in World War Il, his postwar life was marred by tragedy and state-sanctioned injustice.
