Finally got a reply to my letter to @rushanaraalibgs.bsky.social and to say I'm disappointed in her response is an understatement.

Dear Aendra Rininsland,

Please accept my apologies for not being able to write back to you sooner.

Thank you for contacting me about the Equality and Human Rights Commission’s updated Code of Practice for services, public functions and associations, which includes guidance on single-sex spaces.

I would like to begin by stating that I passionately believe trans people deserve safety, dignity and respect. Everyone should be able to be themselves and live their lives free from intimidation or abuse.

As you highlight, last year the Supreme Court ruled that sex in the Equality Act 2010 refers to biological sex. After careful consideration and scrutiny by Ministers, updated guidance from the Equality and Human Rights Commission was laid in Parliament on 21 May to reflect this.

I know that trans people and organisations have expressed concerns about the new guidance. I think it is very important to emphasise that neither the Supreme Court judgment, nor the new code, alter the fact that trans people remain a protected group under the Equality Act 2010 and should be able to live their lives free from harassment and discrimination.

The guidance, while reflecting the findings of the Supreme Court in terms of access to single-sex spaces, also emphasises that service providers should make sure that trans people have access to essential services, such as toilets. It says they should consider if and how trans

people may be disadvantaged and suggests a holistic approach to service provision by providing a mix of services which may include both separate or single-sex services and mixed-sex services. Specialist legal advice should be taken, if needed.

Parliament now has to consider the guidance. It is extremely important to note the Supreme Court warned against reading its judgment “as a triumph of one or more groups in our society at the expense of another”. As it explained, transgender people are protected by the Equality Act 2010, passed by the last Labour Government - not only against discrimination through the protected characteristic of gender reassignment - but also against direct discrimination, indirect discrimination and harassment in substance in their acquired gender. These protections are available to transgender people regardless of whether they possess a Gender Recognition Certificate or not.

I really question whether I'll still live in the UK a year from now.

In one case, a trans intersex woman described using the male toilets during a work party as she was not out to her employer, “which was in accordance with the gender I was presenting as, the gender I was assigned at birth, and EHRC guidance”. However, security staff believed she should be using the female toilet as they presumed she was a trans man and ordered her to leave the event altogether.

In another case, a tall, flat chested cis woman with short hair described being surrounded by a group of women in a toilet at Victoria station, who threatened to call the police and told her “don’t you know you’re not allowed in here anymore” in the wake of the Supreme Court ruling.

“Before the ruling any challenges had been gentle, like ‘oh by the way this is the ladies’,” she was quoted as saying, “and people were embarrassed or apologetic when I said ‘it’s okay I’m a girl’, but now it’s aggressive and horrible.”

The single stupidest thing about 3rd labellers continues to be the fact it's impossible to prevent them from using labels not in their service record. It's the very first thing I'd change about them at this point, tbth — it's actively preventing me from recruiting new help for XBlock.

This is razor sharp in a way I've not read from any other writer on the topic. So many lines I could quote. It's absolutely excellent. Go read it.

The queer vote, the, for lack of a better word, ‘internationalist’ vote, are invariably going to be core pillars of any modern centre-left party’s coalition. They’ll put up with a certain amount of performative moderation, given how frightening the alternatives are, but their patience is not infinite. People will not cast ballots for a party that is actively oppressing them, removing longstanding rights, or describing them in dehumanizing terms.

The actual centre-left coalition is bartenders, supermarket shelve stackers, and waitresses. People who live in a big city in a small rental with roommates. Nurses, teachers, office staff. Young aspirational couples in the suburbs. Students and recent grads. Progressive professionals and, yes, academics.

To those who are baffled by the hatred of Starmer from the left, ask yourself, if you were to be prevented from using a toilet, would it matter to you if it was done directly, or through an intermediary? Ask yourself also how people who work service roles might feel about those who outsource ugly, discriminatory conversations to them, in order to keep their own hands clean, to maintain their self-image as ‘decent’ people.

Centrist American political commentators are mystified that Kier Starmer's time as UK Prime Minister has crashed and burned. He did everything they wanted and everyone hated him anyway.
UK Prime Minister Kier Starmer, who lurched the historically center-left Labour Party to the political right in his tenure leading the party, resigned this morning. His approval ratings at the end of his tenure leading the country are historically abysmal.

Starmer embraced the right wing anti-trans movement, overseeing a ban on gender affirming care for trans youth in the National Health Service (NHS), he welcomed a right wing policy on immigration, consistently appearing to be a champion for racist Brits and not winning a single new voter from it.

"We risk becoming an island of strangers," Starmer said after introducing a white paper in 2025 promising to "take back our borders."

On culture issues, Starmer was the socially conservative hard liner that US centrists have implored the US Democratic Party to become for years. Economically, he was a mixed bag to be honest. UK newspapers are obsessed with culture wars even as much as US newspapers are, and Starmer did his best play to the approval of a small handful of failson editors on Fleet Street and got exactly nil political purchase from the effort.

This is the recurring story for Starmer's tenure and centrism overall. Centrists spend millions, write constant articles, and advisors are paid handsomely to tell center left parties that right wing voters can be won by tactically adopting right wing positions for hot, divided issues like trans rights and immigration.

This all leads to a disastrous political outcome for the government. It suggests a human rights case on Article 8 rights, which it will lose, followed perhaps by a ruling in Strasbourg, which it will also lose, all just in time to coincide with the next general election.

All of that is preventable. None of it has to happen. But what is required, as ever, is the one commodity that we do not seem to possess, which is courage. Politicians need to show they have the conviction to grapple with this issue. No-one else can do it really: not the courts, not the EHRC, not the campaigners on either side.
