Physics/cloud/data center energy efficiency/HPC. This one's for personal viewpoints and technical stuff I find cool. Open to questions and try to reply to interesting ones. Also at and Slack and Discord.
"Sometime earlier this decade, we passed some invisible line where it became cheaper to produce energy from the sun and the wind than from setting stuff on fire." (@billmckibben.bsky.social in this interview with Ezra Klein -- link in the comments.)
Responding to a support request on a weekend when one of the dogs starts roughhousing with the other one sitting next to me. I've been experimenting with voice input so this happened.
Made my day when @jeffgeerling.com stopped by the Texas Tech #SC25 booth to take a look at our x86 mini-clusters that run Warewulf, Ansible, Spack, and complete scientific #HPC applications with the same software stack as on our main clusters.
P.S.: We built a 20-node x86 mini-cluster with 2.5 GbE plus a head node with 2 TB NFS storage for 2/3rds of that amount (pre-tarriffs) that handily out-performs @jeffgeerling.com's 10-node effort and without trying came in second in our first entry into the sbcc.io undergraduate student competition.
Those of you who know me know what this is. It’s midway through its initial qualification test runs now.
Meme for my next university IT internal management meeting. Feedback welcome!
Dear @bsky.app: Literally nobody wants this setting on by default, in my opinion. Certainly I don't, and it's annoying to have to turn it off in every instance of the app on every device that I own, rather than having the setting be sticky for my account across all devices. Fix this, please?
I bought this for the featured content, but what am I supposed to do with the DVDs? None of the machines I have at work or at home have DVD drives, whether small or large. Oh, wait: I do have a Windows PC the university gave me that I could usefully reimage with Rocky Linux! @rockylinux.org
We've got 8 HPC centers and 27 individuals so far with entries in the community map at https://hpc.social/map/! We've added automated scanning and manual review of URLs entered for purposes of safety and enabled self-editing of your responses to the map entry form. Thanks @vsoch!
Passed our first 150 accounts on https://mast.hpc.social and growing steadily! #HPC #Mastodon #community
Third test in 7 days since I left early from #SC22 and still testing clear! I credit my trusty mask. It looks like a plain cloth one but it hides an N95 secret! I find it can be adjusted to fit snugly & is easier to put on and adjust. I replace the N95 periodically. Works for me.
This is from the man himself, folks. Resist the peer pressure and follow the science. Wear your masks at @Supercomputing! https://www.wired.com/story/anthony-faucis-sign-off-message/
