Aquatic ecologist specialising in fish. Also very interested in moths, including leaf-mining larvae.
Just spotted two Choreutis nemorana webs on a fig tree at work (only planted a couple of years ago). Didn't see them last week. Possibly the second record for VC 61, after one from @rwhooster.bsky.social recently? #teammoth #YorkshireMoths @doublekidney.bsky.social @eggboxenvy.bsky.social
A Small Marbled in my garden (East Yorkshire, VC 61) last night! #teammoth #YorkshireMoths @doublekidney.bsky.social @migrantmothuk.bsky.social
Two new moth species for the garden (East Yorkshire, VC 61) last night: Scorched Carpet and Black Arches. Also the smartest Blood-vein I've seen and another Small Mottled Willow. #teammoth #YorkshireMoths @doublekidney.bsky.social @migrantmothuk.bsky.social
More interesting moths in the last few nights, including Bordered Straw (on lavender), Pyrausta despicata (new for garden), Nephopterix angustella, a third Dewick's Plusia (on lavender) and three Small Mottled Willow. #teammoth #YorkshireMoths @doublekidney.bsky.social @migrantmothuk.bsky.social
Acrolepiopsis assectella was new for my garden this week. Also a second record of Tree-lichen Beauty, plus Agriphila selasella and Plain Pug. #teammoth #YorkshireMoths @doublekidney.bsky.social
Recent moth highlights: two Small Mottled Willow, the second Dewick's Plusia of the year (to Ni Moth lure), Aphelia viburnana (ex larva on creeping willow) and Phyllonorycter emberizaepenella (ex mine on snowberry). #teammoth #YorkshireMoths @doublekidney.bsky.social @migrantmothuk.bsky.social
A few recent moth highlights: Six-belted Clearwing (new for the garden), first Leopard Moth for 8 years, second garden record of Oak Nycteoline, Small Chocolate-tip (ex larva on creeping willow). #teammoth #YorkshireMoths @doublekidney.bsky.social
Really pleased to add Dewick's Plusia to the garden list last night (attracted to a Ni Moth pheromone lure). Possibly only the fifth site for VC 61/East Yorkshire. #teammoth #YorkshireMoths @doublekidney.bsky.social
A few nice moths from a lowland heath recently: Phyllonorycter quinqueguttella (mine on creeping willow), Small Chocolate-tip (larva on creeping willow), Carpatolechia alburnella and Aristotelia ericinella. #teammoth #YorkshireMoths @doublekidney.bsky.social @eggboxenvy.bsky.social
Here they are. I'm going to try to photograph all aberrations from now on! One of the things that irritated me last year was losing what looked like a bilateral gynandromorph.
Blue-bordered Carpet was new for my garden last night, closely following second records of Least Carpet and Dwarf Cream Wave. This aberrant Heart & Dart was also worthy of a photo. #teammoth #YorkshireMoths @doublekidney.bsky.social
It's an often underappreciated way of filling some gaps in distribution maps. These are my light trapping (first) and leafminering (second) sites in Yorkshire from a few years ago. (I've trapped in other places in a group, but they're not in my MapMate.)
I've found Etainia sericopeza and E. louisella mines quite a few times over the years, but never E. decentella ... until today. Extremely cryptic mine on a sycamore samara. #teammoth #YorkshireMoths @doublekidney.bsky.social @eggboxenvy.bsky.social
A few recent moth larvae highlights: second VC 61 record of Antispila metallella (mine on dogwood), Coleophora violacea (case on birch), Depressaria radiella (on hogweed) and Stigmella crataegella (mine on hawthorn). #teammoth #YorkshireMoths @doublekidney.bsky.social @eggboxenvy.bsky.social
Some interesting micros in my garden recently. Possibly the first Yorkshire record of Cydia inquinatana, second VC 61 record of Nemapogon ruricolella, Ephestia kuehniella/Vitula serratilineella to check and Pammene aurana. #teammoth #YorkshireMoths @doublekidney.bsky.social @eggboxenvy.bsky.social
I caught two of these Privet Hawk-moths last night. Not many records from my garden. #teammoth #YorkshireMoths
A Coleophora siccifolia larval case on hawthorn, only the fifth VC 61 record I believe, was a bit of a surprise just down the road from my house today. Also a Leucoptera laburnella mine on laburnum. #teammoth #YorkshireMoths @doublekidney.bsky.social
A few moths from the woods yesterday, despite persistent rain: Adela croesella, Epinotia demarniana, Coleophora binderella (case on birch) and Perittia obscurepunctella (mine on honeysuckle). #teammoth #YorkshireMoths @doublekidney.bsky.social
Not many moths recently, but a few highlights nonetheless: third garden records of Shears and Epinotia nanana, first (surprisingly) of Chilo phragmitella, and what looks like the fourth VC 61 record of Stigmella sorbi (from the woods, not garden). #teammoth #YorkshireMoths @doublekidney.bsky.social
A video (it was dark!) of midwife toads calling in Woodsetts, South Yorkshire, last night. Could hear them all down the street! #teamtoad @ynuorg.bsky.social
Just my second garden (VC 61) record of Chamomile Shark in 16 years, from a few nights ago. #teammoth #YorkshireMoths @doublekidney.bsky.social
A miracle has occurred in my garden. After making a complete hash of potting a Ni Moth in the morning, I netted what was surely the same individual nectaring on red valerian last night. Off to buy a lottery ticket now. #teammoth #YorkshireMoths @doublekidney.bsky.social @migrantmothuk.bsky.social
After yesterday's Currant Clearwing, I got a Red-tipped Clearwing today. Both were ~2 weeks earlier than my previous earliest garden record. Also had an early Common Footman recently, apparently only a day later than the earliest Yorkshire record. #teammoth #YorkshireMoths @doublekidney.bsky.social
Some moths at last, including Bordered Straw, Currant Clearwing, Seraphim and what looks like Neofaculta ericetella. Also a Hummingbird Hawk-moth and eleven Painted Ladies on the red valerian in the garden (VC 61). #teammoth #YorkshireMoths @doublekidney.bsky.social @migrantmothuk.bsky.social
Some interesting moths in the last couple of nights, including Tawny Pinion (new for the garden), Chocolate-tip, Waved Umber, Streamer, Brindled Beauty, Grey Shoulder-knot, etc. #teammoth #YorkshireMoths @doublekidney.bsky.social
Some moths that recently emerged from #leafmines collected in the autumn: Phyllonorycter lautella (oak), P. harrisella (oak), P. blancardella (apple) and P. viminiella (willow). #TeamMoth #YorkshireMoths
Some vacated Phyllonorycter lantanella mines in South Yorkshire (VC 63) today, the first time I've found them on Viburnum tinus 'in the wild'. Also a Pammene giganteana to a SKI lure in East Yorkshire (VC 61). #teammoth #YorkshireMoths @doublekidney.bsky.social
Two differently coloured Oak Beauties from the other night. One of the smartest spring moths! Seems to be getting commoner around here. Took 8 years to catch my first, and only seven records in the last 14 years, but have already had four this year. #teammoth #MothsMatter #YorkshireMoths
This drab form of Calybites phasianipennella was a bit of a surprise on 25 February. The adult overwinters, but this appears to be the 'earliest' Yorkshire record. #TeamMoth #MothsMatter @doublekidney.bsky.social
