Why I vote Green.

The 99% shouldn't have to pay for the banking crisis, the fuel crisis, or the climate crisis, or the next crisis, or the one after that. The average citizen shouldn't be told to cut back, or to change her lifestyle, for decisions made by warmongers, sociopaths, fossil fuel industry or whoever else. The British people shouldn't be told that if they have no job it is their fault. Migrants shouldn't be scapegoated and blamed for our social or economic problems.

So yes, I vote Green. I don't believe the narrative about an interfering big government, recklessly spending and annoyingly intervening, creating a culture of lazy scroungers and lax borders. That kind of thinking prescribes one thing: nothing. It tells us that to get where we need to go, our government needs to do an awful lot less than it has. We leave it to the market, promote hate, praise selfishness and greed, and hope it all turns out alright. I say no. Enough.

We need to move vested interests and big money out of politics.
We need a new politics, of the people, for the people, and by the people.
We aren't asking for people to live in the stone age, but in the 21st century.
We need to update our way of making decisions that affect us all.
We need the planet and its people to come first.

Chilling.

In 1962 l was a Conservative. I believed privilege could only be justified by service, high taxes on very high incomes were necessary to prevent an entrepreneurial economy becoming a rentier economy, and Keynesian growth would finance public service improvements and a welfare state that steadily reduced inequality. I wa: suspicious of ideologically driven, large-scale change. These were the mainstream policies of the Macmillan government at the time. In 6o years I have moved from centre right to hard left without changing my opinions.
