A fantastic end to this year's Political Summer School. It was brilliant to hear the maiden speeches, on everything from fixing potholes to building a more respectful society. Huge thanks to everyone who took part and made it a success. Already looking forward to next year.
Wonderful to welcome Andy Slaughter as the new Solicitor General. Andy brings a wealth of experience to the role, having served as Shadow Solicitor General, Chair of the Justice Select Committee and as a barrister. I am looking forward to working together.
Wonderful to host a Summer School Reception for young people yesterday in Parliament. We were joined by Southwark Youth Parliament, Lewisham Young Mayor’s Team and other organisations working with young people in our constituency. Thank you Steph Peacock for joining us too!
Last night Andy Burnham offered me the job of Attorney General and I was delighted to accept. Thanks to all the people who have supported me along the way. Never stop following your dreams.
Really good to speak at the Government’s Legal Department Summer Diversity Scheme, which gives work experience to people from backgrounds underrepresented in the legal profession. Great meeting some of the participants, I hope they have a really rewarding summer.
Great to be at the conference today announcing @andyburnham.bsky.social as the new Leader of the Labour Party. His speech was full of our Labour values and hope for the future. I’m full of optimism for what comes next.
I had the privilege of meeting with charities and experts working to tackle online violence against women and girls. Their experience and expertise is vital in helping shape the Crown Prosecution Service's Action Plan to better protect women and girls online.
It was great to host the Prosecutor and Prosecuting Team of the Year Awards yesterday, to celebrate the hard work of prosecution teams across the Government. Congratulations to all the winners and nominees!
Breakfast clubs are proven to boost attainment, attendance & life chances. That's why I'm delighted that from September three new free breakfast clubs will open at Holy Trinity, Our Lady & St Philip Neri and Kelvin Grove. @UKLabour is continuing to deliver for families 🥣🌹
I recently spoke to the Justice Select Committee about how I'm ensuring the CPS is aligned with Labour's goal to halve VAWG in a decade. As part of this work, we have set up a £5 million pilot scheme to better support victims of domestic abuse in the justice system.
Great to speak with MPs today in Parliament about the nationwide rollout of the Early Victims' Right to Review and the difference it will make for victims of rape and serious sexual violence.
A lovely morning at the National Parliamentary Prayer Breakfast with Father Philip Smith and Bishop Lennox Hamilton. This year's theme was hope for the future – something I think we can all get behind.
Thank you to 5 News for interviewing @jadeblueldn.bsky.social and me this evening about the nationwide rollout of the Early Victims' Right to Review. This gives victims more control over their case and a second chance at justice.
The Early Victims' Right to Review is about putting victims at the heart of our justice system. The system wasn't working for victims of rape and sexual assault. @jadeblueldn.bsky.social has campaigned tirelessly so no other woman has to go through what she did.
The Early Victims' Right to Review will be rolled out nationwide. The rollout was only possible due to the work of campaigners such as @jadeblueldn.bsky.social. This is a big step forward, giving victims of rape and serious sexual offences a second chance at justice.
Thank you to Carole and everyone at Catford and Bromley Synagogue for inviting me and @janetdaby.bsky.social to visit today. It was wonderful to tour the synagogue and meet the community. We discussed the great work it does with young people, and the need to do more to tackle antisemitism.
Thank you to @barnardos.org.uk for inviting me to visit their FGM Centre to hear more about its vital work tackling harmful attitudes towards women and girls. Listening about their experiences was powerful. It demonstrates why this work matters and why VAWG is my top priority.
Great to host a drop-in for MPs today explaining the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme and the work of the Attorney General's Office. As Solicitor General, I worked with victims and their families to extend the timeframe for referrals by up to six months.
Fantastic to be at the Horniman’s 125 year anniversary celebrations today. I have been coming here since I was a child & never grow tired of it! The new gardens are amazing & I am so proud we received funding from this Labour Government for them.
I was honoured to open Hestia‘s new therapeutic garden in my constituency last Friday. Hestia does incredible work supporting vulnerable individuals across London. Spaces like these form part of their holistic ethos to help service users on their journey to recovery.
This morning we came together in Lewisham for Armed Forces Day alongside our veterans, serving personnel, and community to say a heartfelt thank you to all who serve or have served.
Great news for families across Lewisham West and East Dulwich. From today, Labour has cut VAT on children's days out this summer. Children's meals, cinema tickets, theme parks will now be more affordable this summer. That's Labour making a real difference. 🎡
As part of Carers Week, I visited Sydenham Ignition Peer Support at Ignition Brewery to hear about their experiences as unpaid carers in Lewisham. The work they do to support those they care for is vital and it's essential that they continue to receive high quality support.
I was so impressed by year one pupils at Our Lady and St Philip Neri Primary School on my visit. They gave me a brilliant presentation about the history of parliament. I also had a brilliant tour of their facilities, including their sky garden and famous brass band room!
Great to join MPs yesterday in welcoming @andyburnham.bsky.social back to Parliament following his brilliant victory in Makerfield!
Thank you to @dawnbutlerbrent.bsky.social for joining us this evening ahead of the Crofton Park by-election on Thursday. Great support on the doors for Alex Brooks, our fantastic @lewishamlabour.bsky.social candidate! 🌹
Extremely pleased and relieved that this Labour Gov is banning social media for under-16s. As a mum of a pre-teen, it’s the thing that keeps me up at night. I know many of my constituents feel the same. That’s why I called for a ban, and I am delighted we’re implementing one.
Despite the rain, the local community came together for a brilliant street party last weekend and raised £375 for St Christopher’s Hospice. Lovely to drop the donation in and meet the team. Thank you to everyone who supported such a great cause!
Tackling VAWG is my number one priority as Solicitor General. This week I met with Andrea Simon the Victims' Commissioner for London to discuss improving access to justice, strengthening support for victims of VAWG, and tackling court delays.
Lovely to visit Amir today, a new Persian restaurant with brilliant food and service on Lordship Lane. Plenty of veggie options on the menu. Great to meet Amir, the owner, too - highly recommend giving it a try!
