Frankenstein's Podcast
@frankenpodcast
A creature-feature podcast about monsters and why we love them. Hosted by Joe Praska and Kalid Hussein.
Up next on the pod! We're doing a double feature of Jean-Paul Ouellette's contributions to the Lovecraft film mythos: THE UNNAMABLE and THE UNNAMABLE II: THE STATEMENT OF RANDOLPH CARTER. Will Kalid fight with or flirt with the monstrous Alyda Winthrop? Find out next week!
1996 was a great year for one of our favs, Brent Spiner. He got to help battle alien harvesters in the summer and then went back in time to our future to fight the Borg in November. Busy couple of months!
I love this bts pic of Tim Curry in Ridley Scott's LEGEND. The creature work was handled by the great Rob Bottin. It took between 5 1/2 - 8 hours to get everything applied! In case you missed it, our episode on LEGEND with special guest, Emelyne Museaux, can be found wherever you get your podcasts!
Here’s a cool BTS shot of Rick Baker working on a full-sized mannequin double of Amber Tamblyn‘s character in THE RING. The mannequin only appeared in a split-second shot in the film, giving us a glimpse of what happened to her 7 days after watching the cursed tape, but it made a big impression!
⭐️ New Episode! ⭐️ Just in time for #America250 - we've decided to finally do our favorite American classic from a German director that's filled to the brim with patriotism and KY Jelly: Roland Emmerich's INDEPENDENCE DAY! 🔗 www.frankensteinspodcast.com/135-the-harv...
“Now that’s what I call a close encounter.” Up next on the pod! Look for it this week!
Recently caught BACKROOMS—absolutely loved it, super stoked it's been so successful theatrically! Can we just take a moment to give some flowers to Robert Bobroczkyi? Absolutely fantastic physical performance as "Pirate Clark" in this film.
New! Special guest Ana Victoria Esquivel joins us to chat about an all-timer film, del Toro's PAN'S LABYRINTH! Lots to unpack, from the fantastical allegories to the realistic depictions of fascism in Franco's Spain...Plus @actordougjones.bsky.social! 🔗 www.frankensteinspodcast.com/134-the-fae-...
A little preview for our next episode: We’ll be discussing David Twohy & Vin Diesel’s 2000 space horror flick, PITCH BLACK, that spawned the RIDDICK franchise! This was a staple movie for young Joe back in the early 2000s, can’t wait to dive deep into it!
Here's the full artwork our artist Jim Tandberg ( @jimtandberg.bsky.social ) did for our recent interview with @actordougjones.bsky.social & Derek Maki. Doug's creature work has been inspiration to all of us & Jim's piece here celebrates some of the amazing characters he's brought to life!
A little preview of our next episode! We had an absolutely delightful chat with Derek Maki of Coolwater Productions and actor Doug Jones about the upcoming documentary, GET ME DOUG JONES!
The creature in Eugenio Martín‘s HORROR EXPRESS is a highly intelligent energy being that can take on the appearance and memories of those it kills. It first appears as a prehistoric ape-like creature. The suit performance was done by the late Juan Olaguivel, who was also an amateur boxer!
It’s Agatha Christie meets THE THING on our next episode! We’ll be diving into Eugenio Martin’s 1972 gothic horror HORROR EXPRESS starring icons Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. Look for it next week! Also, shout out to @arrowvideo.bsky.social for the awesome physical media release this deserves!
Now watching! Shoutout to @arrowvideo.bsky.social for the fantastic 4k set here. Love everything about it!
“They say there’s nothing new under the sun. But under the ground...” Coming soon on the pod! We’ll be chatting TREMORS with special guest Andre Hyland — look for it next week!
Shoutout to our pal, @jimtandberg.bsky.social, for the amazing original artwork as always!
Bryan Fuller’s new film, DUST BUNNY, will be the topic of our next episode! It’s a strikingly original, R-rated children’s movie, that blends action/crime-thriller vibes with a whimsical, dark fairy tale. We’ll be chatting about it with special guest, @jessiegender.bsky.social — look for it soon!
Tillman Singer’s 2024 euro-horror flick, CUCKOO, is our next podcast topic! Hunter Schafer proves a formidably badass final girl & Dan Stevens is a delightful little weirdo of a villain in this gonzo story that goes to some truly unexpected places. @westcoaststrange.bsky.social will be joining us!
The monster effects in THE BRAIN (1988) are certainly a highlight, but overall 80s aesthetics are also a lot of fun in general. Kinda want this on a T-shirt… Look for our upcoming episode on THE BRAIN this week!
Getting prepped for our first episode back! Who’s all seen this low-budget gem from 1988? #TheBrain #80sHorror #CreatureFeature
Watched SPLIT SECOND (1992). A campy serial killer thriller, inexplicably set in the ‘future’ where it’s Rutger Hauer vs. a monster of a killer who may or may not be satan? Dripping with cheese but a hell if a fun time!
If you listened to our most recent episode on #Wednesday, you heard we'll be taking a short break! Don't worry, we won't be gone long. We'll plan to get some new episodes out by late February/early March. In the meantime, be on the lookout for some fun, bonus-content in the feed! Creep it easy!
Lots of great ‘Yule Log’ options out there but we’re particularly partial to the Calcifer Yule Log from Studio Ghibli 🤩 Happy Holidays!
Wasn’t exactly sure what to expect going into Netflix’s WEDNESDAY but it’s admittedly quite good! There’s a fun fusion between modern YA tropes and late 90s/early 2000s shows like BUFFY or CHARMED, all with a very distinct Tim Burton flair. Look for our episode on WEDNESDAY coming next week!
Here are the organizations referenced in our most recent episode for those able to help support members of our Somali community and other immigrant communities here in Minnesota:
Was recently given this as a holiday gift. Essentially, it’s ‘what if Lovecraft but also Dr. Seuss.’ All the rhyming and the colorful illustrations of the elder things, mi-go and shaggoths are particularly fun.
Coming soon on the pod/ We had an amazing conversation with the woman behind the Toxic Avenger, Luisa Guerreiro aka Toxie the Bod! Look for it this week!
