Summary:

He hadn’t meant to ask it— and if he had, he wished he hadn’t sounded like he did: petulant and adolescent. He had been holding that question inside of him for the last two, then five, seven, eleven years — a decade’s worth of frustration built up until he could no longer control it. Kyouji was an adult. There never needed to be a reason for why he stopped seeing him. But still, some part of Satomi — young, too young to know better than to ask — still wanted to know the answer.

Kyouji’s features tightened — an aborted flinch of his mouth — before he relaxed his jaw against his palm. “Satomi-kun...” He began to say. That false smile of his returned as he said, “Would you believe me if I said I got roped into king crab fishing off the coast for four years?"

Satomi’s mouth twisted. “No.” He spoke around another forkful of salty-sweet food. “Did you?”

“Maybe.” That grin widened. It didn’t reach his eyes.

Asshole, Satomi thought. Get lost at sea, then. See if I care.

Having exploded whatever future he could have had in Tokyo, Satomi finds himself back in Osaka — and through a dazzling set of horrible mistakes, finds himself chasing Kyouji.

All it would take was one press of his hips and Kyouji would be sheathed inside him. The thought made him feel like he’d spent his life in a cage and suddenly he was freed, frantic and hurried.

Kyouji reacted almost entirely contrary — as though Satomi had suddenly handcuffed him to a radiator. He reeled back, his hands coming to keep Satomi’s hips still. “Co— Satomi-kun, condom, condom,” he began to say, as he pushed up.

“It’s fine.” Satomi pushed him back onto the couch. “It’s fine, who cares,” he said, something delirious coming over him now that what he had before him was being threatened to be taken away. “It’s New Year’s. Stop squirming.”

Kyouji’s eyes were wide, his eyebrows arched. But he didn’t stop him, didn’t voice any other protests. He didn’t say anything at all — dazed, red-faced. Kyouji’s breathing was shallow and quick. His eyes tracked from Satomi’s to the space between them, to Satomi’s fingers curled around his cock.

He dug his fingernail into the soft flesh of Kyouji’s neck and watched him flinch instead. Satomi stifled an excited breath as Kyouji’s brows tensed.

Kyouji had tried to stay up for him. When, not if, they moved in together, Satomi wondered if Kyouji would be like this every time he had to stay out late. The thought made him dizzy. He dropped to his knees, between Kyouji’s spread legs. Sitting like this was an invitation, really.

Satomi ducked under the flannel blanket. He heard the roughness of his breath, closed in under this makeshift fort, as he nuzzled his way up Kyouji’s thighs. The fabric of his sweats felt so smooth and warm against his cheek.

“Can’t you just skip the work party?” Kyouji had asked, weeks before, when Satomi had told him about his plans.

“I don’t want to make a bad impression. It’s my first year,” Satomi replied.

Of course he wanted to skip it. He’d already seen how most of his coworkers acted when they were drunk, and the thought of having to deal with them — rowdy and boisterous in all the ways that aggravated Satomi — seemed almost as horrible as the fact that he had to spend the night away from Kyouji.

Kyouji bullied his way into Satomi’s arms. “No room for a plus one?”

Satomi couldn’t help but let out a surprised laugh at the idea of walking into a party with Kyouji — a man his boss had met in an interrogation room, who he thought had threatened to chop Satomi into pieces — as his arm candy. “If I could shrink you down and put you in my pocket, I’d let you tag along.”

Kyouji smiled. “I’d even keep quiet, too.”

Satomi kissed him. Kyouji was warm, and firm, as he pressed him up against the kitchen counter. He kissed him again for good measure. He couldn’t ever just kiss him once. “I doubt that.”
