This is the Alagoas Currassow, extinct in the wild. Why? Because it lived in a small area of Atlantic Rainforest we humans cut down. The last 5 wild birds were luckily captured and a breeding programme will release their offspring when the forest grows back. A happy sad tale. #birds

Journalist's Decalogue

Tomás Eloy Martínez (1998)

1) The journalist's only heritage is his good name. Each time an insufficient or unfaithful article is signed to one's own conscience, part of that heritage, or all, is lost.

2) You have to defend before the editors the time that everyone needs to write a good text and the space they need within the publication.

3) A photo that serves only as an illustration and does not add any information does not belong to journalism. The photos are not a complement, but news in themselves.

4) You have to work as a team. A newsroom is a laboratory in which everyone must share their findings and failures, and in which everyone must feel that what happens to one happens to everyone.

5) You should not write a single word of which you are not sure, nor give a single piece of information of which you are not fully sure.

6) You have to work with the files always at hand, verifying each data and clearly establishing the meaning of each word that is written.

7) Avoid the risk of serving as a vehicle for the interests of public or private groups. A journalist who publishes all the press releases they give him, without verifying them, should change his profession and dedicate himself to being a messenger.

8) You must always use clear, concise and transparent language. Usually, what is said in ten words can always be said in nine, or seven.

9) Finding the axis and the head of a news is not an easy task. Neither is it to tell a news story. You should never start narrating if you are not sure that it can be done with clarity, effectiveness, and thinking about the interest of a reader more than in one's own show-out.

10) Always remember that journalism is, above all, an act of service. It is to put yourself in the other's place, to understand the other. And, sometimes, be someone else.
