🌍 World Zoonoses Day ~60% of human infectious diseases and ~75% of emerging ones originate in animals. 🦠 Mpox and Ebola are key examples of zoonotic diseases. In Preventing outbreaks requires more than medicine: environmental protection, biodiversity and peace are key to global health security.
🇨🇫 From May 25–27, 2026, HIOH participated in the Bangui Scientific Days in the Central African Republic. Together with WWF CAR, HIOH showcased its One Health work in Dzanga-Sangha, connected with researchers and students, explored collaborations, and highlighted local conservation efforts.
🐛Researchers at HIOH recently demonstrated that the larvae of the greater wax moth (Galleria mellonella) can work as a reliable pre-selector when studying human pathogens. This is a vital step in the attempt to reduce animal testing on mammals. 👉 Read the full article here: bit.ly/43V6arx
Cohort Update from Côte d’Ivoire:🧪 Final samples from >1,000 participants and their livestock are now at our partner lab at CHU Bouaké for various analyses and long-term storage, while subsamples are underway to Germany as backup. Study results are being returned to local communities.
🪰Mosquitos, leeches, flies and other critters and their potential to help mapping biodiversity and studying zoonotic diseases: Jan Frederik Gogarten, wildlife disease ecologist at HIOH, consulted on this article by Knowable Magazine. Check it out here: knowablemagazine.org/content/arti...
🎉Milestone: After two years of preparation and two intense months, today marks the final day of our Cohort 2026. Shown here are the completed shipment boxes and the dry ice prepared for the first sample delivery to HIOH. A huge thank you to the incredible team whose hard work made this possible.
🎉Congratulations to Jenny Jaffe on the successful defense of her dissertation!🧑🎓 After her time at the @taichimpproject.bsky.social Project and in the working group of Fabian Leendertz, Jenny completed her doctoral research 🔬 We wish her continued success in her future career and research activities!
