I spent the 1st hour of my 1st solo bikepacking jaunt at a shop for different gear /more food, the next hour loading & reloading the bike, &, once riding, the next 2 hours fretting over mountain lions. After fixing my 1st flat & letting myself relax & ride: deep joy. Cowgirl Trail 2017

From the shade, the Cowgirl Trail stretches off for miles into the sun, tall grass on either side & trees further back. A beautiful June sky is full of fat, puffy clouds. (Yes, it’s actually called The Cowboy Trail, but I renamed it.)

A very shallow & very wide river, the summer sunlight shows how clear the water is & how sandy the river bottom. A bike water bottle is visible in the foreground, chilling in the water (which was delightfully cool despite the midday heat).
There was a bridge to cross the river; I climbed down to stick my toes in it.

My favorite picture from this trek, it shows my heavily laden and inexpertly packed bike leaning against the sidewall of a sturdy wooden bridge. Trail I’ve already ridden stretches back toward the western sunset. Clouds scoop across the sky. I’m close enough to where I’ll stop for the night to take an extra moment in this beautiful spot.
