Nick knew people. He could smile and make smalltalk and be friendly, but these weren’t his friends. They were his bunkmates or his bosses or part of his squadron, not friends. Friends, he always had a little trouble with. Everyone knew him, but he took great pains to ensure they never knew him, and after the last person that knew him bit the dust with a whimper rather than the bang he deserved, Nick was content never being known again. No one could ever come close, no one could replace what they had together.

His grief was the only company he needed, and he was gonna keep poking and re-opening that nasty festering hole in his chest for the rest of his life until he was assigned FM-429.

FM-429 wasn’t a bandage over it, more like stuffing into the wound. Filled all the empty space with something pleasant and warm and inviting that Nick could forget about how much it hurt. How much he was still mourning. And yeah, the stuffing soaked up all the blood and pus which was all well and good but it ripped open his scabs every time he had to unlink. The void would always return as soon as the weight of the Mech’s bond was broken, leaving Nick itching and as eager as ever to return to it.

The hurt and the pleasure; the constant cycle. Nick should have been removed from his post the second the Mech whirred to life under his touch.

There’s a few scars on his hands, all of them old. Even the one that looks the most recent, the thin lines of careful handwriting that read “ XOXO ”. Nick had explained that one the other night, that he had given that to him. They did it to each other, tattoos made with needles dipped in pen ink when they were young. The ink had faded now, but the mark remained.

All these parts of himself that should be his own, now foreign. So many stories across his very body that he doesn’t know how to explain.

His reflection is familiar, but unfamiliar. The man looking back at him, he’s known him all his life–but he doesn’t remember all the times he’s looked in a mirror, he can barely recall how he looked growing up. What did this same man look like a year ago? Two years ago? A decade?

For the time being, only Nick knew that answer.

“He’s gone postal.” Teagues said, finally breaking the terse silence. Everyone turned to look at him, and the soldier began to stammer out an explanation. “I mean, the pilots…They’re under so much pressure, all the time, you know? So he’s just…He…snapped?”

He phrased it like a question. A frail, feeble question, like he was seeking an answer or reassurance from his comrades, many of whom only responded by shifting uncomfortably in their seats.

Of course, none of them could say definitively that Roosa wasn’t the type to just ‘snap’. They didn’t know him particularly well–in fact, no one except the other pilots could claim that they did. There was no denying just how absurdly out of character this sudden heel-turn was for him, but the why of it all settled over all the soldiers like an uncomfortable wool blanket. Maybe it was pressure, maybe it was some sort of Mech integration fueled psychosis, maybe he was like this all along…

Or maybe it was that thing they weren’t supposed to talk about.
