We had another smokey day and some fire weather is on the way. Fingers crossed for a good outcome in the coming days
I’m visiting Nelson, B.C. and the smoke has been getting steadily worse all day
To pierce through the veil of vaguebooking and “what happened on X:” Lenny Zhou said this, to which Sean Orr accused him of lying about another councillor (and posting an AI slop image) #vanpoli
Canadian soccer fans just dig out their hockey jerseys, they are also red after all
Congrats to @tyolsen.bsky.social and Kristen Holliday who won gold in the #cajawards26 Local Government Reporting category
I’m going to Ottawa this weekend for a journalist conference and my west coast mind can’t comprehend this weather, how do I dress for this nonsense?
The way this family has been keeping the neighborhood updated even through their grief is such a gift
A sad update from police this morning: the man who was hit by this driver at Comox and Bute has now died.
I'm very sick of getting so many "AI is killing all life, the solution is more AI" press releases Latest one 🙃
There was a horrible vehicle ramming incident in my neighborhood that led to an elderly man being seriously injured. Police now say the suspect has been arrested. The man’s son left this note in Comox Street.
I know Vancouver's Websummit as a pretty corporate affair featuring big-name tech speakers. But this year they put Canadian far-right YouTuber Lauren Southern on a panel... along with the guy who promoted ivermectin for COVID. Earlier this week federal AI minister Evan Solomon spoke.
An Indigenous comedy troupe apparently pranked Lindsay Shepherd, a former BC Conservative staffer who was fired after she complained bitterly about having to view any symbols of Orange Shirt Day (In Canada, Orange Shirt Day commemorates experiences of residential school survivors)
Contains possibly the most confusing Dr. Bonnie Henry quote I’ve ever seen
It's dreadful, full colonial-period racism. Taking us back to the days of Trutch in an attempt to make the illegal land grab from back then a current non-issue
The Vancouver Board of Trade is hosting Mayor Ken Sim for a “state of the city” address and these are some of the questions from the audience #vanpoli
Update to this #vanpoli story: a reader alerted me that the @VanShittyTV1 X account that repeatedly posted super gross images of Sean Orr has been shut down
A right-wing “news” website then helps to launder the truly dumb conspiracy theories cooked up by these white nationalists. They don’t bother to include information about the incredibly racist stuff these people routinely talk about.
A couple of photos of the people who showed up to protest this OneBC talk. This event was billed as a town hall - but in reality it was a very long talk by Billboard Chris, a Metro Vancouver man who regularly protests gender affirming care, SOGI and human rights protections for trans people.
Far-right provincial party OneBC will hold a town hall at Vancouver's Hellenic Hall (Dunbar) this Saturday. #bcpoli
@kehyslop.bsky.social captured part of this exchange with this photo of Mayor Sim trying to get the hell out of there
In the Vancity Lookout newsletter (which you should all subscribe to!) @natevl.bsky.social records a nice moment of #vanpoli journalism co-operation. Hope your foot is ok @jmcelroy.bsky.social!
