At Aggregate Studio, three things set us apart from other architecture firms: an engaged, collaborative, empathetic design process; principal-led accountability and delivery; and the lived experience that shapes our values - including founder Josh Mings' upbringing in Columbus, Indiana, and in Section 8 housing.
Growing up in Columbus, an unusual small Midwestern city that hosts projects by many architectural giants, Josh saw how architecture can respect the traditional Midwestern downtown while showing the community who it is and where it is going. This experience instilled a belief in creating dignified, community-centered architecture rooted in core values that became Aggregate's own: Purpose-Driven Impact, Dignified Design for All, Collaborative Process, Technical Rigor, and Forward-Looking Optimism. It's no coincidence that these values align with "The Columbus Way" - a process in which the community comes together collaboratively to solve problems and generate innovative ideas. Aggregate's empathetic and collaborative process is similar: bring together optimistic ideas grounded in reality, guided by us, to create high-impact projects.
Josh's experience in substandard affordable housing also shaped our commitment to dignified design for all. So often, affordable housing is othered, a signifier of less than rather than what it should provide: stability, safety, and a foundation for opportunity, not reinforcing inequity. Everyone deserves well-designed, long-lasting housing that is empathetic, dignified, and collaborative, allowing the foundation to turn housing into a home. We can create community-centered, dignified housing with optimism and do so within today's real-world contexts.
These experiences directly inform Aggregate Studio's process. We aggregate ideas, perspectives, and constraints in a principal-led/Design Partner manner to create cohesive, high-impact designs and solutions. Every project begins with listening: understanding the site, history, commu…
