On this day in 2015: It was a unique work trip to Russia, to the lands of the Finno-Ugric peoples. I taught Finnish word formation at Mordovia University for a week; many of the students had Mordvin or Erzya language roots in their families. It was a great trip but will not happen anymore. 🙁

Verba (lithuanian) means this kind of a decorated branch. Palm Sunday is called Verbų sekmadienis - Sunday of Verbas.
An etymology for the Palm Sunday: In Finland, children dress as witches, bunnies or cats and go to neighbours to wish happiness, and the verb for this is ”virpoa”, which is an old baltic loanword (see modern Lithuanian word ”verba”, also means a decorated branch). Virvon varvon tuoreeks terveeks 🌿
