Professor of Experimental Psychology at the University of Nottingham. Interested in associative learning, and its application to all manner of stuff. Not really interested in brains. He/him.
Our first pilot with these stimuli shows we are again seeing more successful learning about a preexposed (i.e. familiar) stimulus than a non-preexposed (i.e. novel) stimulus.
They look weird, but are great stimuli for studying novelty and familiarity, and come with a load of metrics to balance the cues on.
Remembered, today, this classic bit of figure captioning from the original Thatcher illusion paper in 1980 by Thompson. Was this the peak of entertaining figure captioning?
University open day with Haselgrove jnr. Always quite a predatory experience, so it was nice to have this vibe confirmed upon arrival...
Definitely not a negatively framed question. Also, really hard to find the data from previous years to compare the methodology.
Half term camp in the Lake District. Only day two was cloudy, during which I had this conversation at a bus stop in Great Langdale: Random Man: where is the start of the Crinkle Crags Mountain? Me: Well, you can start over there near the entrance to Stool End Farm. 1/2
Fax? Let me just close AOL instant messenger, find my Nokia, and I'll be right down.
Walking into work this morning with a general sense of reluctance and nausea. Today 2797 members of staff will receive letters informing them that they are at risk of redundancy. By my guess somewhere between 60 and 70% of academic staff.
This guy was strolling in the opposite direction as I walked along the lakeside on my way into work.
Haselgrove, Bouton and Urcelay. Together at last. Lovely to have Mark visit us at @notts-psych.bsky.social for scientific chunter and beer.
Sunday morning in the @peakdistrict.bsky.social walking around the Goyt Valley.
Haselgrove jnr back from a day of universities fair Current higher education choices are, apparently, being determined by the quality of the merch...
20 degrees C. Time for the shorts of hope to come out of the hibernation drawer, and to adorn the legs of pale dazzlement
Watching Louis Theroux: Inside the Manosphere. Where, among other things, I learned that HS ticky tokky isn't the social media feed for a rail link between London and the West Midlands.
Great to hear Prof David Sanderson from @durhampsych.bsky.social tell us about "Prediction error and the rate of learning in Pavlovian conditioning" during today's @notts-psych.bsky.social seminar.
The new book project is a Go! Meeting up with my co-author to discuss content and structure* *Drink beer in York and catch up on old times.
