This is not just a blip. It’s a systemic failure, and the consequences are clearest when we focus on children. Over the past decade, two-thirds of children killed on Irish roads were either walking or cycling. These are not high-speed collisions on motorways or late-night incidents involving alcohol. These are children walking to school or cycling in their neighbourhoods – engaging in activities that should be ordinary, safe, and encouraged.

How cars change us with Tara Goddard

Why do people behave so badly behind the wheel of a car? Why do reporters and the police use passive language to describe automobile crashes and traffic violence? How do the words we use make a difference in street safety? Dr. Tara Goddard, one of the top scholars studying what it is that cars do to our brains and the way we treat each other in the world, has some thoughts — and she's done the research.

Tara is an associate professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning at Texas A&M University. Her work focuses on creating a just transportation system through safe roadway design and inclusive transportation planning.

We talked with her about "motonormativity," how race influences how drivers treat pedestrians, and why language matters if we want to change the conversation about whom streets are for.

According to the Monash University study of car accidents by color, black cars are the most accident-prone due to their low visibility against dark roads. Other dangerous car colors are grey, silver, blue and red.

Here’s how the other colors fared in terms of accident risk, compared with white cars:

Black: 12% higher risk
Gray: 11% higher risk
Silver: 10% higher risk
Blue: 7% higher risk
Red: 7% higher risk

It doesn’t read like anything is changing in terms of densities- despite the ITs’ sub-heading. Although, It is unclear on when the parks and community buildings would be developed and by who.

The council defended its plans and said there appeared to be “confusion” about proposed densities. While the master plan covered 77 hectares, just 45.5 hectares were industrial lands, designated for rezoning, for up to 7,000 homes.

This “fully complies” with national and city density policies of 200 to 250 units per hectare, the council said. In addition, there were sites already zoned for housing that could yield another 1,500 homes.

“Therefore, the overall lands could support 8,500 homes,” it said. “Clarifying text will be provided in the master plan to address this matter.”

To be fair he has form. Here he is proclaiming the death of Irish tourism with the opening of Terminal 2. Not everything he says should be taken seriously. A lot of passenger journeys are by car and taxi so the passenger cap can’t be removed until we have a higher capacity transport connection

In Ireland, an EIA is also required if a road is widened to a width of four lanes – in order, for example, to introduce a bus lane. The EU expects an EIA for the construction of a fresh four lane road of 10km; Irish law expects an EIA for the addition of two lanes to an existing two lane road of 500 metres (in urban areas).

Wastewater treatment is another one. Irish Water owns some 1,400 wastewater treatment plants. The biggest one, at Ringsend, serves several hundred thousand people. A half a dozen serve more than a hundred thousand people. The rest of the 1,400 are small. The EU’s EIA directive mandates that large plants, serving more than 150,000 people, need an EIA. It says smaller plants should be screened for EIAs, but doesn’t set a specific threshold size. Ireland set the screening threshold at just 10,000 people.

Others have spoken of this. I, too, studied history in college. The Israeli people have a very tragic history of their own. Looking at the CVs of several Cabinet ministers, they are children of survivors of the Holocaust. They should understand better than anyone what genocide, the loss of life, the weaponising of food and the killing of children involve. They do not. What is happening at the moment is disgusting. It is the genocide of our time. While the Irish Government is doing a lot, the European Union can do an awful lot more. I ask the Minister of State to take that message from this House to Europe that we need to move en bloc and it needs to be in the realm of sanctions next time, not just debates in the chamber.
