Pearll continues to show how awful of a person she is, and I cannot believe this is the best Ward 5 can do. They don’t even have to be a progressive/leftist, but damn, can’t we get somebody with at least some common sense and decency?

Brian Coyle, the first openly LGBTQ+ council member, voted in 1988 in favor of the ban. Coyle died in 1991 from AIDS-related complications. On Tuesday, Council Member Pearll Warren said overturning the ban would be disrespecting Coyle's legacy. But local LGBTQ+ public historian Noah Barth, who examined Coyle's papers at the Minnesota Historical Society, says Coyle's vote doesn't tell the whole story.
"It is a fact that this ordinance is discriminatory and did not prevent HIV infections and using a decades old opinion of one gay person to dispute a broad coalition of queer people here today is tokenization," he said in reply to Warren on Wednesday. "Brian Coyle loved his community and he wanted us to have sexual freedom. But he knew that taking away these spaces would make us less safe, and they did. Had he been able at the time, he would have preserved them."

On a recent Saturday morning in Uptown, a line for free hot dogs snaked around the block outside Moona Moono, the Korean-inspired coffee shop and boutique that opened last year at Hennepin Avenue and W. 31st Street.

Inside, shoppers browsed plants and K-beauty products while sipping matchas. Outside, kids chalked the sidewalks as Prince songs blasted during the neighborhood’s Uptown Summer Kickoff festival.

At least on the surface, the area showed no signs of imminent death.

And yet the demise of Uptown has become a near-constant topic of conversation in Minneapolis, most recently fueled by the back-to-back closing announcements of longtime restaurants the Lowry and Red Cow, both of which cited prolonged Hennepin Avenue construction among the reasons they could no longer make the numbers work.

“It is always really sad when any business closes in Uptown,” said Angie Lee, owner of Moona Moono. “What I would say, though, is restaurants are facing headwinds like never before. … Why isn’t every restaurant closure in Minnesota right now a story about the neighborhood? For some reason there are people who are strangely obsessed with the failure of Uptown.”

Depending on who’s talking, Uptown is either falling apart, coming back or simply changing into something new. What many residents and business owners do agree on, however, is that it’s not the same.

The version people remember usually depends on when they came of age there: the artist-and-record-store era associated with Prince, punk venues and counterculture in the 1980s and ’90s; the nightlife-and-shopping district of the 2000s and 2010s, when national chains like Apple, CB2 and Victoria’s Secret moved in alongside packed bars; or the neighborhood still grappling with fallout from the pandemic, civil unrest and years of upheaval, including most recently, Operation Metro Surge.

The only commercial real estate person I've ever seen say something smart about Uptown.

Suzanne Schefcik, vice president of capital markets for Colliers, a commercial real estate brokerage, said that because the per square-foot cost of retail and restaurant space in the area is about half of what businesses pay in the North Loop, the area is well poised to attract smaller, locally owned businesses that can’t afford more expensive areas.

“It lost that neighborhood feel, but it’s in the process of recalibrating and reinventing itself,” Schefcik said. “The bottom line is that Uptown is evolving from a nightlife destination to a neighborhood-servicing corridor.”

Did you know in Minneapolis you’re supposed to leave four feet between cars parked on the street? And at least five feet from a driveway or alley? Maybe I’m overestimating how big that is, but I don’t think anyone actually follows either of those rules?
