Trying to figure out build plans using scraps and mismatched reclaimed woods (and what exterior screws I already have) is breaking my brain a bit 😥 But I’d rather it get used AND not have to buy anything extra.

While I’ve nailed the ironing for the 0.2mm nozzle I’m having a hell of a time getting the ironing right for the 0.4mm nozzle for this model. Honestly I’m at the point where I don’t think I can with this design. On the plus side my kid is going to be SO excited to get a pile of “dragon eye coins”

I am SO close to nailing ironing that it’s kind of ridiculous. I say close enough to proceed: Next up is seeing if changing infill percentages will help with the freezing method due to cold retention. Does 10% perform much worse than the current 30%? How much better is 50-80-100%, if at all?
Latest batch of test stamps: Mold Release Alternatives We have the freezer only acting as a control in the top right (hairspray didn’t make enough of a difference imo), and then we tried: • Petroleum Jelly (with and without freezing) • Water • Mineral Oil (with and without freezing)
The new design prints face up fantastically! I might actually know what I’m doing 😝 Almost, because I’m still dialing in ironing with a 0.2 nozzle and I am SO CLOSE. On the plus side I have pieces that are close enough for testing with potential mold release alternatives one can find in the house.

Accidentally went fancy with the new blank design BUT it doesn't need supports to print face up! In theory. I do have concerns about the overhangs but the proof will be in the 3D printed pudding - ETA 1 hr 6 min. The nice thing is these blanks amount to 8-10 cents each (at my current filament cost)
Since I didn’t get a good side by side comparison I started with printing face down on a smooth plate. Same tests with hair spray and putting the stamp in the freezer, but this time also trying a combo of those… which maybe helped? If the release was better it was only slightly.
For V2 I really wanted to get a better draft, which unfortunately meant redrawing the symbol in the modeling software, for which I used an imported image with much thicker lines. For printing I’m also tweaking the elephants foot and ironing settings.
OK, tests round 1 - only using the face up #3Dprint (because i learned enough for V2 before reprinting the face down) I tested stamping with hairspray as a mold release, putting the stamp in the freezer before using, and this is when I realised the elephant’s foot setting issue, so I did a control.
Let’s go back to that other mistake I mentioned, because I’m testing the difference between printing face down on a smooth plate & face up with ironing on to smooth out top surfaces. Yeah, I forgot to make a model that wouldn’t need supports regardless of orientation. ANYWAY, ironing @ 15% flow
For the first test I just wanted to see what would happen if I dove right in. I know others said they cool theirs down with ice first but let’s be science adjacent about this! Well.. see for yourself. I later realised my elephants foot compensation was at 0… which likely contributed to this.
