Every point on the sun is emitting light in every direction. So if you stick a board with a tiny hole in between the sun and the ground, the hole only lets the light from each point on the sun travelling in a single direction through the hole.

It was cloudy where I am for the partial eclipse. I had my telescope out and ready, but only had a few seconds right at the start to see anything. Managed to capture this blurry image through the clouds just as the Moon was starting to take a bite out of the Sun. :)

The sun emits light in all directions. Some of that light is going in the right direction to travel through the hole and is projected onto the surface behind it. The moon blocks some of the light that would have come through the hole, and so projects a shadow through the hole. Not sure this helps? 😅

I’m in the UK, so I had a chance to visit with @greyalien.bsky.social and @bchezza.bsky.social and go for a walk. The countryside is a bit less green than usual, but we had a lovely time and it was great to catch up!

Spent several hours playing with #GREATARTIST this week and I'm starting to get a feel for how to nudge it in certain directions intentionally, while it also remains spontaneous and unpredictable. These are titled "RAM Shortage", "Misremembering", "Rothko 2.0", and "Woven Dreams", respectively.

A photo I took of the total solar eclipse in August 2024. Most of the image is black. In the center is a black circle (the moon) surrounded by a large, bright fuzzy disc of white light. There are a couple of places on the edge of the black disc where light is shining, creating little spots of bright light that break up the rim.

I was trying to search for information on when the first world cup match is, and google ai gave me this impressive answer

I’ve been making these miniature ceramic houses in collaboration with my wife. I make the little houses and she hand-weaves the colourful roofs! They’re really fun to make (and lots of fun to arrange into little villages to photograph) :)

I was inspired during the Artemis II mission to make some mugs. They are finally out of the kiln and finished! They might not be everyone’s cup of tea (har har), but I love ‘em!

I was thinking about how if you're on the Moon, the Earth basically looks like it's always in (nearly) the same place to you, and then I wondered how that would look over time, and then I got a little carried away and modelled it all in Unity to see for myself!

Captured by the Artemis II crew during their lunar flyby on April 6, 2026, this image shows the Moon fully eclipsing the Sun. From the crew’s perspective, the Moon appears large enough to completely block the Sun, creating nearly 54 minutes of totality and extending the view far beyond what is possible from Earth. The corona forms a glowing halo around the dark lunar disk, revealing details of the Sun’s outer atmosphere typically hidden by its brightness. Also visible are stars, typically too faint to see when imaging the Moon, but with the Moon in darkness stars are readily imaged. This unique vantage point provides both a striking visual and a valuable opportunity for astronauts to document and describe the corona during humanity’s return to deep space. The faint glow of the nearside of the Moon is visible in this image, having been illuminated by light reflected off the Earth.

Although the full lunar disk extends beyond the image, the Sun’s faint corona remains visible as a soft halo of light around the Moon’s edge. From this deep-space vantage point, the Moon appeared large enough to sustain nearly 54 minutes of totality, far longer than total solar eclipses typically seen from Earth. This cropped perspective emphasizes the scale of the alignment and reveals subtle structure in the corona during the rare, extended eclipse observed by the crew. The bright silver glint on the left edge of the image is the planet Venus. The round, dark gray feature visible along the Moon’s horizon between the 9 and 10 o’clock positions is Mare Crisium, a feature visible from Earth. We see faint lunar features because light reflected off of Earth provides a source of illumination.

Fresh out of the kiln! 🔥 My little ceramic cliffside town is finally done! I’m really happy with the result. I carved it from a solid block of clay. It is hollow so that I can put a light inside, and the light can come out of some of the windows.
