After a DV homicide, law enforcement is quick to call it an ‘isolated incident’ or say the general public is not at risk. But that is exactly what allows society to turn away, choose not to act. At what point will we stop saying DV is isolated and start seeing the pattern of violent patriarchy? 2/

"Our society views domestic violence differently than they view other forms of violence," Ruth Zakarin, CEO of the Massachusetts Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence, told me. "There's a level of acceptance we have in this country when domestic violence happens that we don't see in other forms of violence, including other mass shootings, in that it's more alarming to the general public when it happens in a public space versus someone's private home. And I will always argue that when a shooting happens in someone's private home, it is still a public health crisis. But we don't identify it in that way."

This is racist murder, not public safety. This is gun violence, not public safety. I hope every journalists demands an explanation on how this keeps the public safe. How indiscriminately shooting people in the street in front of their child is public safety. We want to know. NOW

On July 13, 2026, at approximately 7:00 AM ET, ICE was conducting targeted surveillance on the last known address of an illegal alien with a final order of removal. An illegal alien departed the residence in a vehicle. ICE law enforcement attempted to conduct a vehicle stop. The vehicle attempted to flee the scene and, fearing for public safety, an officer discharged his weapon.
The driver of the vehicle was struck, and emergency services were immediately contacted. He passed away from his injuries.
The Biddeford Police Department and FBI responded to the scene. DHS OIG has been notified and like all discharge of firearms this will be investigated. This is a developing situation, and we will update the public when more information is available.

Gun Violence Awareness Month arrives with added urgency this year, as we fight the effort to repeal Massachusetts' nation-leading 2024 gun violence prevention law.
Everyone deserves the freedom that comes from being safe in their homes and in their communities. In Massachusetts, we've built a strong legislative foundation that enables the ongoing work to eradicate gun violence - now we have to protect it. As we mark Gun Violence Awareness Month and the beginning of summer, November will be here before we know it.

Eight children were killed in the deadliest mass shooting in over two years. Eight children were buried today. But there is no public outrage. It’s the racism. It’s the acceptance of preventable death. It’s the numbness to gun violence. I’m horrified by how little attention this is getting.

How we talk about an issue dictates how we respond to it. And that is absolutely the case with domestic violence. Last week I wrote about how law enforcement so often responds to a DV homicide with some version of *there’s no threat to the general public*. Now this. 🧵
