Just finished reading Why I Love Horror, a collection of essays by contemporary horror authors on what began or fuels their love of the genre. Neat to see familiar faces in here and learn more about the humans behind my favorite books, as well as a few new-to-me authors!

Enjoying a yellow gardenia fragrance oolong sample, gifted by a friend. Thick mouthfeel over the saddle of the tongue, prominent chestnut notes, lingering savory lemon shortbread finish. Strong cha qi though, I can’t drink much on an empty stomach. Will finish the session after eating!

"Me vale verga, you sick old twist. Let me go!" Mateo tried to holler, though in truth his mouth moved too slowly and thickly to get much volume.

This beautiful stranger popped up in my strawberry box this morning. Anyone know what this flower is? Seek app said “🤷‍♀️ dicot 🤷‍♀️” which is…unhelpful.

The next stop was the Bubble Lounge, a pale gold-tapestried room full of matching cushioned sofas, shiny bar stools and elegant glass globes of electric light. The room fairly glowed and made Mary feel she was suspended inside a glass of champagne. She got lightheaded with the thought. Such luxury was beyond what she was taught to want, but secretly she felt a yearning for the glamorous life. She wanted to be the kind of woman who said shocking things and sipped bubbly drinks in a golden room. As the tour moved on, Mary cast one more look around the Bubble Lounge, certain she would be spending most of her weekend stretched out on its satiny settee.

Delfina and Consuelo ushered young Silvio out to draw water from a well, which then was heated in an iron pot over the stove. While Adela cut onion, potato and carrot, the sweet and round-faced Consuelo skinned a rabbit expertly, pulling it down from the line of hanging small game in their humble kitchen. This rabbit was quartered and thrown into the pot with the wholesome roots and it was not long before a succulent scent permeated the small cabin. Father Ellis observed the family as they moved through this simple routine, attempting to discern which would be the first to convert under his tutelage. The boy was sweet and pure and could surely become a strong man of the house, one to hold these ladies to their new convictions after the father’s departure. He was too young to listen to a stranger when the matriarchal influence was so strong here, however, and would have to be taught his lessons once the women were handled.

When Dolores was little he would hold her fat tiny hand, dipping his pinkie finger into each baby knuckle dimple in turn. All the way across her ten fingers and back again like a new piano student. But that was when Mama was still around, before an unwakeable sleep and two lungs full of blood carried her away. Dolores was only two at the time and had no Mama memories of her own, only ones Daddy and Grandpa Dan told her around the stove. Told her over and over again until she could roll them around in her palms like shooters. Smooth, perfect little things with heft and gleam. Precious. Daddy was a different man back then. He’s aged too fast, just like all the other daddies nowadays. The lines about his eyes and the thinness of his mouth are products of the depression, the influenza, and the loss of a soulmate. She would do anything to fill those lines back in. To plump his lips back into a rich smile that smelled like cedar bark in summertime.

This is Epilobium Ciliatum, also known as Fringed Willowherb. It grows wild all over the PNW from Alaska to Oregon and is so pretty! This is my first try at working foraged herbs in classical tea processing styles, so I’m excited to see how it turns out!

Little Leaf’s teacher handed me this note, and I didn’t realize at first it was addressed to my toddler, thought it was for me. My partner was like “why would this be for you?” so I had to explain that Lydia did in fact also throw dirt at me this week.
