Blackbeard slows to a stop when they finally reach the Real World - or what he assumes is the Real World. He's never actually been here before, but it sure isn't Pirate Land. For one thing, there are smells. So many smells! Not just the tang of plastic and the comforting musk of cardboard, but some sort of salty smell that stings his nose, and a fresh green smell that tickles a bit. And the sun! The sun isn't just a circle, it's - dickfuck it's bright! - probably shouldn't look at that too long. And it's warm.
Blackbeard's whole face feels warm, like he's entered the gentlest of Easy Bake Ovens.

Stede isn't as unworldly as everyone thinks he is.
He has been to a queer bar before. He's even been to this queer bar before. With Ed, actually, back when Ed was in grad school and they had the stupid luck of living in the same city for a couple of years. And then Ed introduced Stede to Mary and his weekend nights got busier, if a little less fun.
But that was back when Stede had no idea that he, himself, was somewhere on the LGBT spectrum. To be fair, that revelation was all of two months ago, and he's still sort of reeling from it. So in this moment, standing outside the door of a gay bar as a newly out man, it strikes Stede that there should be some sort of protocol, some sort of pageantry.
Maybe he should announce himself when he enters? Or even better, ask Lucius to announce him! Unfortunately, Lucius isn't here yet, and Stede's starting to get weird looks from people entering and exiting the bar.

"Nah, it's stupid."
"Go on?" Stede says, hope mingling with the caffeine and the sugar in his bloodstream, making him feel like he could levitate a little if he tried.
"I wish we could have a fresh start." Ed shrugs, as if he's dismissing his own idea.
"We could do that." Stede says, not entirely sure what he means by it. The wheels in Stede's head are turning, propelled by pancakes and the memory of kissing Ed, a memory he won't shove down and hide, not ever, not this time. He can't go back in time. He can't hit "undo." But he can change things from here on out. He can start again.

Chapter 5: To the last drop (Ed)
Summary:

Ed could handle commiserating with Stede a thousand miles away. He could even handle the brief glimpse he saw from backstage as Stede tried and failed to sneak into the auditorium unobtrusively, clambering over students and muttering awkward apologies.

But up close after the lecture, Ed felt wave after wave of familiarity and fondness.

All he could think was, “My friend is here.”

Ed and Stede reconnect in a maybe-possibly-probably haunted old house.

They've had a fight.
Doesn't matter what it was. Ed stacked the firewood
"backwards." Stede put the empty marmalade jar back on the shelf. It was a nothing fight. A triviality.
A trifle.
Except pirate captains (even former pirate captains) don't trifle. They live and die by the sword. They've commanded men into battle. They've got Captain Voices. They use them.
Of course, on the Revenge, it was all play. Even when Stede came back and Ed wanted nothing to do with him, it was play. Tug of war, hide and seek, capture the flag (the flag's the fish). The stakes had changed, but not the game.
Here, on the island, the game has disappeared like mist at dawn.
And Ed doesn't know what he's doing.

It wasn’t Stede’s fault. It was just…kind of a lot to see him in person, all three-dimensional and smelling like snow and buzzing with enough energy to power a small nuclear reactor.

Ed had been an idiot to think that he could see Stede again and feel, well, normal.

Seeing Stede in Boston felt good. Too good. Like he had wooshed past the Stede Bonnet event horizon and was careening toward the abyss.
