I accidentally started writing down ideas for an original story. I had no plans of writing an original story until a few hours ago. Anyway, I gave my FMC a divine lineage, then made that god/goddess an absolute failure and an embarrassment to all of godhood to balance it out 🤷

This Blade of Ours is a wonderful sequel to This Monster of Mine, one of my all-time favourite books. Both are written in a way that inspires you to create something yourself, which I believe is the best way for a piece of art to affect its audience.

In the sequel, Sarai and Kadra find themselves facing the consequences of their triumph over the antagonist of the previous book, trying to work within a system they broke, and solving a new case — one that hints at a threat to all of Ur Dinyé.

Dealing with greedy Guilds, religious zealots, and the dubious joys of being in the centre of public ttention while trying to keep a crumbling empire and its people safe from destruction is no small feat.

This sequel is everything I could've wished for, balancing between compelling political intrigue, a revenge plot years in the making, and the challenges of Sarai and Kadra's relationship. It made me wish I could cancel all my plans and binge-read it in one sitting.

It highlights how it's not enough to gain power, you have to find a way to keep it, which may be difficult without compromising your ideals. Between Sarai, Kadra, Cassandane and Harion we are presented with vastly different ideas on how to be a good, effective politician and it's fascinating to see them implemented to varying degree of success.

On a personal level for Sarai and Kadra, the story delves into what it means to find comfort and love with someone deeply scarred, both physically and psychologically.

Neither of them are magically free from trauma and pain just because they fell in love with each other. They both have their pasts and the ghosts that still haunt them. This is particularly emphasised in Kadra's POV chapters which allow us a glimpse into what has made him the force of nature we know.

If you love This Monster of Mine you’re going to love This Blade of Ours just as much.

showstopper, the blood on her clothes, the broken ruler, the way we're not privy to the audience's reaction until the very end.
• The creators truly understood that monster/villain romance is about integrating your own shadow and emerging from your trauma a fully realised person. Also that sometimes women deserve a little violent murder and to sing their triumph out in the spotlight.
• I love the pacing, the story crescendoes until it ends with one hell of a bang. It made me feel the way I feel sitting in the audience in the theatre and my heart beats faster and faster with every song of a show until I'm left shell-shocked after the final song, feeling like I'm not the same person who sat down to watch it three or so hours earlier.

I can't deal with the character limit rn so here are my favourite aspects of the movie from my notes app, with the whole text pasted into alt text! BEWARE SPOILERS!!! #YourMonster #YourMonsterSpoilers 1/2

• Laura's emotional journey from the abandoned woman accepting everything life and a shitty guy throw her way to finally letting her rage out and escalating to that fabulous final number?
• The eventual Jackie & Laura alliance!!! The way the movie plays with our expectations to cast the pretty blonde bombshell as the interloper stealing Laura's career and her ex only to reveal she had no idea about anything and actually felt uncomfortable with Jacob's behaviour was perfect. And the fact that she so is ready to scheme with Laura and give her back the spotlight so he can get what he deserves is heart-warming.
• This movie said "we support women's rights but more importantly we support women's wrongs" with its whole chest

and I'm here for that.
• The focus on sexuality and how it can intersect with rage and how confusing it can be to be a woman/AFAB forced to navigate the society's expectations for how you're supposed to behave. The contraditions of being told to fight for yourself so people don't call you a doormat but not hard enough lest people call you a bitch.
• The reveal of Jacob and Maizie's betrayal and how the aftermath was filmed and scored is chef's kiss.
• The cool "feminist" dude making it big thanks to the uncredited work of a woman as so many "supportive" men have before? Bringing us back to all the brilliant women who "assisted" the great thinkers of our civilisation and sometimes did most of the work but never got the credit they deserved.

• The movie establishing right off the bat that Jacob abandoned Laura in the worst time of her life because he couldn't support her for a year, to later underscore that what he couldn't do for a year she did for him for five?!
• We already hate him AND THEN we find out he and Maizie have been sleeping together even before he broke up with Laura in a double betrayal? Leavung her to reckon with the fact that all this time she had neither a loyal partner nor a trusted friend?
• AND THEN!! He cut Laura out of the musical SHE HELPED DEVELOP, cast an actress that doesn't seem to have a musical theathre background but rather a TV career but she's generating a lot of buzz right now.
• Jacob off-handedly mentioning Maizie got a support role despite not

auditioning "because she's making a name for herself", then Laura wondering if sleeping with him is the prerequisite to get a role and missing by assuming it's Jackie but finally the movie reveals actually it's been Maizie? Implying Laura was right about the casting criteria just wrong about the target without spelling it out for us??
• And I'm not even touching on how well crafter the monster's character and his and Laura's romance is. The beast with a thorn in its paw, the monstrous part of Laura smarting from being shut away (in the closet of all places!!!). Laura learning to appreciate the Monster and, by extension, the ugly, angry parts of herself.
• The bloody culmination being cut in such a way we discover what exactly happened as Laura sings the

Thanks! You cut paper into strips, fold it into a harmonica (I figured out the width of each piece by folding in half and half etc until I liked the width). Draw half a shape with it's center on the fold and cut it out. Repeat until you have enough for a garland or run out of paper 😂

I'm taking singing lessons & properly learning how to read sheet music for the 1st time in my life, despite singing in a choir as a kid. Except I learn best by writing everything by hand so now I'm also (re)learning how to write the notes and it's taking me back to learning how to write in general😂
