Sufficiency, climate work, and river restoration in Finnish North Karelia. I fly fish, hike, and ski. e-MTB pilled. Rural. Left in politics.
I might put this one on Tinder, even though I'm not a hiker. Thoughts and suggestions?
I'm getting a bit emotional about everything now. When I biked through the new routes with the e-MTB in early spring, birds singing and the air being fresh, I understood why I am Karelian, why I moved here and how special this society is. #Sufficiency
The last old forests are being destroyed for money in Finland. I'm glad to have seen these places. That is also why I support Sámi rights in the north. These places will be gone if no one pays attention to them.
I'm not the perfect selfie-taker because I do it so rarely. Taking part in local and regional society for people and nature is great. The politics is hard. But necessary. Here, I'm carrying stuff to go fishing on restored rivers. The picture has not so far had much Tinder purchase.
For once, there was a farmer's market-type tent in my town. Had to purchase some essentials. The garlic will be great with many foods, and I cannot be sure whether the chanterelle harvest will continue at my own spots. Keep the money in the region, as they say. #Sufficiency
I perhaps have biased opinions due to exposure, but I think old-growth forests are the best forests. Visited one today after blueberry picking. We don't have many left. Since it is #IndigenousPeoplesDay you should follow the Sámi who chart them here @luonnonmetsatsapmi.bsky.social Do visit one!
This is the most fun in North Karelia. The bike is so easy to ride straight to the forest. I had some luck with blueberries today, but chanterelles are the premium product. Then you see a little bright yellow shroom popping up, and another! How happy can a little thing like that be? #Nature
It’s that time of the year when carbon-neutral e-MTB foraging produces forest delights for the long dark winter ahead! This doesn’t cost anything. Finns enjoy Everone’s Rights. You can forage pretty much everywhere and even sell it tax-free. #Sufficiency #NorthKarelia 🤠🫐
Tired: North American 2026 megafires Also tired: European 2026 megafires Bubbling under: Siberian 2026 megafires Notice the scale. #NasaWorldView #ClimateHeating worldview.earthdata.nasa.gov?v=84.3944284...
I might perhaps understand. When I take a bus from my town to the regional capital of Joensuu, and the electric Intercity train to Helsinki (200 km/h per hour) The world seems good enough. The beer is too expensive in the restaurant car. Might do an Interrail in Central Europe just for better lager
Kermajärvellä on tuollaisia jokunen tullut vastaan. Jääkauden lopun historista ilmeisesti kertovat. Täytyypä tehdä tuonne retki sähköpyörällä reppulautan kanssa taas, kun kerkiää.
I took the basic rescue service course. If my hip were not so busted, I would try to develop that much more to help the other Europeans with the pyrocumulonimbus fires. Think about #ClimateAction as taking part in society even at high personal cost. It might not always pay back immediately.
It has been a cool July in Finland after a slightly warmer-than-normal June—much empathy for Western and Central Europe, the southern UK, and Canada. charts.ecmwf.int/products/ext...
It is hard to fathom, but even volcanic eruptions such as the Eyjafjallajökull event back in the day might become more common with climate heating. The melting of ice on top of the volcanoes seems to influence their behaviour.
Ain’t nothing grandiose, just some e-MTB enabled mushroom picking in an old-growth forest reserve. Yesterday I went for blueberries! You can forage in Finland and sell the harvest for free without taxes. It’s part of Everyone’s Rights. #Sufficiency
I’m still in Helsinki. Went out in the local pubs, sang karaoke from the heart and ended up swimming with Art students in the Gulf of Finland. It was a big night, Mom is well and issues have been sorted. A stressful visit to the capital ended with Neil Young’s Sugar Mountain in the karaoke.
I’ve always supported minority rights because folks organize the best parties, it should be obvious that my handle is safe for all. In Finland, saying you are on the Left covers it. But I might as well mention it
I don’t even mind sounding like a mad tree-hugger. The fragments of eternity still cling on in this time of waste, and every little bit matters. #Sufficiency is well niche, but regular in the North Karelian society.
Seeing real work for people and nature in the Finnish Northeast is worth mentioning. My town winning the national cycling infrastructure prize and dams being dismantled for migratory fish further south It is part of being Karelian. #Sufficiency
It’s been alright in Helsinki, despite the family issues. I went out big time, found old trees on a local restored brook and some artists at the festival were like Fuck the Right Wing Government Helsinki folks are polite #Helsinki
I know where I’ll be when I pass, on one of the hundreds of restored rivers. This is important. Not too many people in Modernity will have this experience of people, nature and society. #Sufficiency
This graph could be of so many technology discourses that emerge and get abandoned, only to come up with new marketing that does not require regulation and sufficiency, especially of the corporations, banks and high-emitting behaviour. #Sufficiency
Be polite, show respect to the River. You will get the fish eventually but it might take twenty years to learn. #FlyFishing
It is Tradition to make feather sticks. You need to learn to make them in all conditions for the fire but also to leave them for others. My friend Tommi, a Border soldier, is the best with them.
I am capable of high self-sufficiency in all seasons, but it leaves out people. Joining the Left Alliance gets me closer to society. Don't try living alone for too long. #Sufficiency
To troll the Russians and #SupportUkraine I quote Tolstoy Empire, Growth, Technology (all age-old concepts) www.goodreads.com/work/quotes/...
I cannot say much about electric SUV cars to drive two kilometers to the super market with, but this is serious business. Not one single component failure. It went through a bog and was outside in a thunderstorm for two days German engineering, Japanese components. #eMTB
This gets to the bottom of things. @poorlydrawnlines.bsky.social #Sufficiency
