Here are examples of some specialized gateways. Apologies that the labels are cut off. I made this quick & dirty. Several of these somatic symptoms had low base rates and poor necessity (most people didn't have 'em, didn't need 'em). But they were required for a specialist subgroup to be classified.
For specialized gateways, you have to weigh necessity (proportion of minimally sufficient sets a symptom appears in) against dispensability. The dispensability index is the complement of the orphan share, δ(s) = 1 − num_orphan(s)/num_covered. δ = 1 means no one gets orphaned if you drop the item.
Not only that, the more stringently you predict the target (conditional prob. >= .80, .90, .95), the more that sufficient sets need to draw from across HiTOP clusters, reinforcing the logic of collapsing them organizationally/structurally. This work is in progress, but here is a working figure: 3/
Exciting day. My set-theoretic reconceptualization of the DSM (w/ MDD, GAD, and PTSD as empirical examples) is out today in JPCS, along with four invited commentaries and my response. I'm biased, but I recommend all six papers. I was really jazzed by all four commentaries. 1/25
For anyone doing translational research in physiological and mental health: The T32 at UCSF was just renewed and *still has spots for this fall*. Applications for Fall 2027 will open in October. I'm a part of the mentorship team, if it matters :)
Some of the greatest friends and colleagues a guy could want. My heart was overfull with the way everyone welcomed my kid with open arms. Such an amazingly reenergizing trip!

Another meet, another PR in the 300 M hurdles! 17-year-old birthday boy advanced to the Meet of Champions (North Coast Championship) next week.
I was a music major and one of the senior thesis options was to write and perform a concert. I wrote an hour of original rock music.
16-year-old is currently 2nd in the league in the 300 hurdles. He lost to the #1 kid by 0.06 seconds today. Here they are on the final hurdle. He's also only a half-inch off of my *college* long jump PR. Very proud papa.
