Four years today since Spooky joined our household. I sometimes wonder if we've adopted a hobbit rather than a cat - nervous of both change and strangers, very food focused, tiny furry feet - but either way, he's a source of joy & occasional bewilderment. Keep up the good work buddy.

This weekend's main reading, The Girl with a Thousand Faces by Sunyi Dean. Strong story, interesting structure, cool use of its historical setting. Puts its characters through a special sort of torment, which get me gripped.

Footsteps made Cualli turn. Two more men and a woman had appeared around the bend of the alley, trapping her between them and the spy. As Baako backed away, two more appeared beyond him, sturdily built and serious looking, dressed in simple tunics and with heavy sticks in their hands.

Cualli cursed herself for a fool.

He'd never seen anything like it, not on farms or fieldwork or in any of his textbooks, finger-long crystals expressing out of the earth in the aftermath of rain. The crystals changed the whole world around them, scattering the sunlight in beautiful blue fragments.
That light could have emerged from a tall tale of the Ossian terraformers, a world remade in strange and fascinating forms. Legends said that half the inhabited planets in the galaxy had been reshaped by the Ossians, those elusive engineers rebuilding entire biosystems before moving on to their next challenge. But the myths about Abaddon painted it as a hellscape, not a miracle of ingenious reinvention.

As is traditional at this time of year, I've woken up to a small stack of books. And because the Prof is the best, I also got homemade cake for breakfast. Writing may or may not happen today, but reading definitely will.
