Professor of Planetary Computing at the University of Cambridge @cst.cam.ac.uk, where I co-lead the @eeg.cl.cam.ac.uk and work on computing for global biodiversity and climate change with @conservation.cam.ac.uk. Homepage at
This is an adorably retro take on rewilding community that made me yearn for geocities guestbooks of old (especially the callout to Tayside). Thanks Paul! rewilding.domain0.org /cc @kathrynnave.eurosky.social
Current status: second into the Ryberg Fjord in Greenland this season and engaging in polar diplomacy
Just passed the arctic circle! Looking for polar bears using the 'very carefully' technique. 🌍
I gave a talk on AI for Science at the Cambridge Union this morning and by the end of it the prime minister had resigned. Coincidence? I think so
There's going to be a full 2016-2025 global run over the coming months, but we can generate tiles for you on-demand for reasonable ROIs if you need something urgently. For the majority of users, v1.0 works just fine. ucam-eo.github.io/tessera-cove... 🌏
We've released the @geotessera.org v1.1 geospatial foundation model, with wider coastal coverage, improved sparse observation accuracy and greater year-on-year temporal stability. anil.recoil.org/notes/tesser... 🌏
So very sad to hear of the passing of Peter Neumann. He was an epic pioneer in computer science, but also such a wonderfully cheerful, supportive person at any hour. If I didn't rhyme with Peter, he wouldn't write my tenure letter, so I got straight down to rhyming! www.nytimes.com/2026/05/17/o...
A very, very happy 100th birthday to David Attenborough from the @conservation.cam.ac.uk crew, via @billsutherland.bsky.social!
In order to dispel persistent rumours that Hamed Haddadi and I are the same person, we used the selfie sofa in Christ's College Cambridge to provide evidence to the contrary. Also, my other weeknotes anil.recoil.org/notes/2026w16
Delighted to win Paper of the Year last night for "Functional Networking for Millions of Docker Containers" at the Cambridge Ring Hall of Fame Awards last night! Read about the other nominees and winners over at www.cst.cam.ac.uk/news/celebra... and find the paper at anil.recoil.org/papers/2025-...
Really like this dashboard from the @rogue-scholar.bsky.social that shows metadata quality for blog feeds with DOIs rogue-scholar.org/communities/...
Friday fun getting TESSERA to support the new Zarr v3 geo-embeddings convention. Instead of islands of Zarr arrays, we now have a "MegaZarr!" that provides a unified store across years, coordinates and 128 dimensions. Try it for yourself at tze.geotessera.org and anil.recoil.org/notes/tesser... 🌍
.plan-26-w10: Streaming TESSERA embeddings straight into the browser with wasm is ridiculously good fun. Release next week if I can get enough oxcaml written to finish the transcoding of embeddings into Zarr! Never thought I'd enjoy frontend coding so much... anil.recoil.org/notes/2026w10
Blimey I'm in the top 10 of @standard.site blogs by domain standard-search.octet-stream.net/stats (just like in school sports, "top 10" for me means "at the 10th spot just sneaking in by a whisker")
Made the cover of @acm.org with "A Decade of Docker Containers", recapping much systems work! Docker grew so fast in those early days that we never got a chance to write an academic paper about it, so this has been a long time coming cacm.acm.org/research/a-d... w/ @justincormack.bsky.social djs55
Save the Cambridge Vet School march today morning in Cambridge with some splendid signs savethevetschool.co.uk @camvetschool.bsky.social
Wow I added support for text/markdown format responses to agents on my website, and within less than 10 minutes one quarter of traffic are agents. E.g. anil.recoil.org/notes/2026w7 is the html and anil.recoil.org/notes/2026w7... is the text version
Watching @ryan.freumh.org give his unified formal calculus talk for package management to an overflowing room at #fosdem! Livestream stream.fosdem.org/k3201.m3u8 and preprint at arxiv.org/pdf/2506.10803 amok.recoil.org/system/media... amok.recoil.org/system/media...
Good news is that we made it there. Bad news is it’s not open at 9 so I’m going to go again tomorrow!
That's good news; the _design quality_ of the new revisions is also very low compared to what was there before. E.g. I find the new forced header page on every PDF to be terribly ugly typesetting after they put so much good work into the acmart style for the rest of the content!
Haha this was me in the BBC article! My @cst.cam.ac.uk office is freezing as the heating there been broken since the pandemic. Nice in the summer though www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
While idly waiting for a train, I realise that Kings Cross is pretty metal
With that many type theorists in one place it had a Raphael feel to it for sure
@xvw.lol notes just how complex modern editor tooling is, esp with agentic workflows #icfpsplash25 - he’s also done the coolest OCaml use of effects I’ve seen to help fix this! discuss.ocaml.org/t/ann-an-exp...
