My tuppence-worth on the ice lolly discourse is that Calippo Shots were the best ice product on the market (though not a lolly in form) and our summers have been weaker without them.

Trajanic altar displayed in library

A Roman altar, carved during the rule of Trajan (98—117 AD), is now on display in the college library.

The altar was bequeathed to the college by Charles James Francis Lloyd (Jim) Williamson (1953). It is dedicated to Silvanus, the Roman tutelary deity of woods and uncultivated lands.

The inscription can be translated: To Silvanus, holy and sacred: Marcus Ulpius Ampliatus, imperial freedman, caretaker, willingly gave this altar as a gift. Marcus Ulpius Ampliatus was a freedman of the emperor.

some nights, supper is rather good.

The image shows three raw chicken thighs, on a bed of mixed vegetables which include carrots, tomatoes, courgette, potato, onion, garlic, and celery, and green beans. These are seasoned with fennel and other herbs.

What is a Lichen?
A lichen is not a single organism; it is a stable symbiotic association between a fungus and algae and/or cyanobacteria.

Like all fungi, lichen fungi require carbon as a food source; this is provided by their symbiotic algae and/or cyanobacteria, that are photosynthetic.

The lichen symbiosis is thought to
be a mutualism, since both the fungi and the photosynthetic partners, called photobionts, benefit.

Which fungi form lichens?
Many unrelated and very different fungi form lichens, including mushroom-forming fungi, and especially cup-fungi.
98% of lichen fungi are cup-fungi, or ascomycetes.
Fully half of all ascomycetes and one in five of all known fungi form lichens.
Lichenisation is an ecological strategy, or a common nutritional mode among unrelated fungi.
