The organizers are looking for volunteers on non-e-bikes (or who do not want to be officially counted) to help with ride safety. As a bonus, there is budget for funding for organizations represented by volunteers, so by doing this you could help bring in a little bit of money for Bike Loud :bikeloud-gold:
We will be riding in a Bike Loud group. Wear your BL shirts, bring your pennants (or buy one at the start of the ride), and meet up in the park along Naito between Salmon and Taylor :shirt: :checkered_flag:

One person is dead, another is in critical condition after 2 separate car crashes in PDX happening within minutes of each other on July 13 One of the crashes happened on Burnside & NE 24th. Here's the letter BikeLoud sent last week to @mayorkwilson.bsky.social @portlandcouncil.bsky.social & PBOT

Re: Improvements to West Burnside
We are writing to urge PBOT to immediately pause the West Burnside paving project. We are concerned with the lack of fiscal transparency on this project, as well as the lack of adherence to the Central City in Motion (CCIM) planning document. We should be taking advantage of paving and ADA curb projects that are slated to occur between 2nd and 24th Avenue to concurrently make pedestrian and bicycle safety improvements.
Respecting the CCIM planning process would achieve better long-term results, instead of locking in another 20+ years of the same deadly street. This would also be the fiscally responsible thing to do, taking advantage of a maintenance project to simultaneously improve safety.
The Burnside corridor could be Downtown’s main street, but PBOT appears to be prioritizing speeding drivers over livability. Tourists and locals alike want Burnside to feel more welcoming. We want to walk and bike to the Chinese Garden, Union Station, and Powell’s Books. We want to bike and walk to Providence Park to see the Thorns or Timbers play after a nosh on NW 21st or 23rd. West Burnside is an incredible connector, yet remains one of the city's most difficult and intimidating streets for people walking and biking.
PBOT's own analysis shows the West Burnside corridor presents an outsized safety risk. West Burnside is designated as a Major City Walkway and a Vision Zero High Crash Corridor with pedestrian crashes occurring at rates above and beyond the city average. Serious injury crashes occur West Burnside at twice the rate of the same section of East Burnside, placing the corridor between 2nd Avenue and 24th Avenue at the center of this safety problem.

Page 2 of BikeLoud letter to the City that says, "Many intersections along this stretch require pedestrians to cross multiple travel lanes while navigating high-speed traffic and frequent turning vehicles. Long distances between marked crossings encourage mid-block crossings, while wide lanes and turning movements reduce drivers' ability to notice people walking until it is too late.
The Burnside corridor deserves a comprehensive Safe Systems approach per Portland’s own Vision Zero action plan. The documented crash history along West Burnside shows that this corridor should remain one of PBOT's highest priorities for investment. We urge PBOT to press pause on this project so that Vision Zero-focused improvements are made when paving, and so that we spend our money wisely to make Portland a better place for everyone.
This is also a matter of good governance. It could be a quadruple win. A road is maintained, bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure is enhanced, and safety for all is improved.

This will be our 5th annual ride focused on bringing joy, curiosity, and thoughtful attention to our urban canopy and its inequities which fall along lines of historical racism and income disparities.

This year we will celebrate all the young trees that have been planted as part of the PCEF (Portland Clean Energy Fund) Equitable Tree Canopy program in these historically under-invested areas!

Our urban trees keep us healthy in many ways, and they deserve our love and protection in return. Let's celebrate our love for our trees, and bring momentum into the movement for climate justice! 🌱❤️🌲

We will gather at 6pm in Lents park, and the 350PDX Action Night will take place until 7pm. Then at 7pm, we'll ride for about 60min to Laurelhurst Park, noticing the urban canopy along the way.

Notes:
- Kids welcome, though they should be able to keep up with a pace that's casual for adults.

We're beyond excited to announce our new operations manager, Claire Vlach. Claire brings ten years of experience in local active transportation advocacy, most recently as the Board Chair of Oregon Walks. She has been an active Bike Loud volunteer and has served on several local public bodies, including currently on the Fixing Our Streets Oversight Committee. Claire is also an urban designer, urban planner, and landscape architect with close to 20 years of experience on public projects including streetscapes, plazas, and transit centers. Her favorite projects are those that rethink public space by converting car-dominated areas into places that center people and community.

Claire grew up in Portland, where she enjoyed taking Tri-Met downtown after school rather than hanging out at the mall. In 2016, after stints in New York, Michigan, and San Francisco, Claire moved back to Portland and rekindled her love of the city. When not on a bike, Claire enjoys dancing, walking with friends, and teaching her two kids words like “diverter” and “induced demand.” She is looking forward to working with Bike Loud to ensure that any Portlander who wants to ride a bike can do so easily, safely, and enjoyably."

Portland Sunday Parkways Presented by Kaiser Permanente will return to East Portland on June 28, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The East Portland 4-mile out-and-back route will have four featured activations, and we are thrilled to debut Verdell Burdine Rutherford Park as a new addition to the East route this year. This free community event led by the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) invites people to walk, bike, roll, and play on car-free streets.

The record high temperatures have us thinking... Did you know at least 25% of land in PDX is paved? The upside is it's mostly land owned by City as streets & parking lots. Land that could be covered in trees or housing or cool green fields. Cities should be for people, not the cars they drive.

Yesterday people from all over Oregon brought their bikes to the capitol building in Salem to celebrate the 55th anniversary of the Bike Bill. BikeLoud Board vice chair @kielbybike.bsky.social took a photo of the gathering & says, "The bike bill is the reason Oregon is such a bike friendly place."

BikeLoud member Matt Z created a bike counter that he uses near his house. He also has a mister arch for cooling off on steamy PDX days. Matt reports NE 26th Greenway had 972 bikes on Monday June 1, the day of the @bike-summer.org kick-off ride! Be counted! Bikes matter!

Matt's Slack post that says, "The Greenway Pulse :mega: Yesterday's launch of Bike Summer / Pedalpalooza activity had the daily bicycle count on the NE26th Greenway soaring to 972 daily bikes before nightfall, nearly doubling the greenway car count and up from a Monday summer average of 500-600 bikes. No doubt the numbers were driven by the fact that the Bike Summer Kickoff Ride was in the NE, ending at nearby Grant Park. The greenway also featured the return of the mister arch for the unseasonably warm 84 degree day. Fun fact: though this giant pikachus didn't want the water (pictured), the tall bike rider, undeterred by the potential height limitations, breezed their way through for refreshment on their way to the kickoff ride (video). Be counted!"
