The Black Archive #46 The Awakening by David Evans-Powell, published by @obversebooks.co.uk A great examination of a mostly overlooked story! The exploration of folk horror and its expression in Who stories is particularly fascinating and helps to define this reader’s love of this aspect in the show
The Black Archive #45 - The Deadly Assassin by @andreworton.bsky.social, published by @obversebooks.co.uk. A wonderful discussion of Robert Holmes' seminal contribution to the series and mythology of the programme. 1/2
Doctor Who-The Handbook-The First Doctor by Howe, Stammers & Walker. A foundational text of Doctor Who scholarship on which so many other reference guides and behind-the-scenes books have been based. Whilst it's been superseded in some respects, its neat and tidy structure is still very helpful.
A Future in Five Minutes: A Biography of Jacqueline Hill by Louise Bremner. An excellently researched insight into one of the earliest companions in Doctor Who, who remains enigmatic with so much of her life and work lost to time. Her tragic and untimely passing is handled with great sensitivity.
Doctor Who - The Underwater Menace by Nigel Robinson, published by Target. A fun and faithful adaptation of this much derided early Troughton adventure. Side note: is it possible the fish people went on to ally with the sea devils to become Homo Amphibia? I’m sure I’m not the first to suggest this!
You Are Not Alone: A Gay History of Doctor Who by @patrickmulkern.bsky.social, published by @tenacrebooks.bsky.social. A fascinating and illuminating book that chronicles the history of our favourite show against the social context of LGBTQ+ liberation, detailing so many biographies of... 1/3
Doctor Who - Judgement of the Judoon by Colin Brake, published by BBC Books. A fun romp that captures the essence of the Tenth Doctor’s era in its lighter moments. Entirely predictable but no less fun because of it. I kind of fell in love with the Judoon Commander and his sweet dedication to Nikki!
The Time Museum - The Story of Doctor Who in 100 Objects from the makers of Doctor Who Magazine. A moreish collection of short essays that pays tribute and captures esoteric links to wider culture. Beautifully presented with some very surprising objects chosen as springboards to discuss wider ideas.
A Peculiar Effect on the BBC by Bernard Wilkie, republished by @tenacrebooks.bsky.social. A highly amusing memoir of one the founders of special effects at the BBC. Wonderfully told anecdotes of wrestling with all kinds of materials to craft television magic with quite a few mishaps along the way!
Leap of Eighth by @reecypontiff.com. A fabulously positive and comprehensive consideration of the Eighth Doctor's multimedia adventures since the TV Movie. A joyous celebration of that special time and beyond, the formative (for me) 'Wilderness Years'. A nostalgic treat and brilliant retrospective!

One of the best things about today’s joyous screening of Warriors of the Deep at the BFI was turning round to see Peter Davison’s delighted face when he saw how they’ve improved the Myrka for the BluRay special edition!
