Gotta love when you wanna ramble, but the character limit is too damn short. :V Anyways, tl;dr I'm a Ghostbusters fanboy from the time I was still single digits, and I've been experimenting with modding my Proton Pack. :3 Much love to my sweet @tracyhedgefox for indulging me.

Anyone that’s been around me long enough knows I am a diehard fan of the Ghostbusters. The movies, the cartoons, the comics, the video games, you name it, I’m all for it. :3

Several years ago, @tracyhedgefox.bsky.social surprised me with the Neutrona Wand (the gun) and I was thrilled to pieces being able to hold that in my hands as a very happy puppykitten. Then they announced the crowdfunding for the full sized “Spengler” proton pack after the success of ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’, and we both pitched in to support it and get a pack. The day that huge box arrived was one of the happiest of my adult life, and little kid me was just screaming happily inside of my head when we got it all hooked up and fired up. I periodically turn it on just to hear the sounds and feel it rumble on its stand sometimes just to feel all warm and fuzzy. <3

As is the case with many folks in the fandom, I was curious about mods and such. Haven’t done anything super crazy, but I was wanting to do one that would let me use a USB rechargeable battery instead of relying on “D” batteries (four of them for the record). Last year I found a seller on Etsy recommended by the guys at Ghostbusters News that sold a surprisingly easy plug and play wire for the USB conversion, and found a battery pack that would fit inside of the little hidden side cubby cabinet. This month I finally worked up the nerve to go through with it, and after removing the Alice frame (metal support that acts as the backpack), along with about 14 screws from the back panel (two of which are slightly smaller than the others), we finally got into the pack after much sweating, swearing and at least one YouTube video tutorial dedicated JUST to doing that step. There’s a bolt that goes straight through to the cyclotron’s insides (the cyclotron is the round section on the bottom where the red lights flash in a circle) that you have to unscrew the cap to after removing the cover, and two of the cylinders in the center of the pack are held in place with two of the middle screws, so when those all came out, those parts were hanging lose, but thankfully they were pretty easy to get back into place (gotta love grooves that show which orientation these things go in).

After the agony of getting the pack open, the easiest part was actually changing out the wire for the new one, and thankfully there was no need for any solder work (I’ve always been interested in learning to do that stuff but definitely wouldn’t want something like this to be my first project). A quick swap later, we now have USB power! Even got it through to the cubby slot after unscrewing an inside panel, and didn’t have to worry about cutting through or dremeling anything (did find a few 3D print files online for replacing that one but this’ll do for now). Once everything was closed back up and screwed back into place, we were finished with one problem but still had another: even though the battery fit inside of the cubby, it was still too tall to plug the cable into it, and I wasn’t looking to snip off any supports to make more room if I could avoid it. Thankfully a quick Amazon search found me a 90 degree USB adapter, and a day later we had a two pack delivered to our front door. Popping that sucker on, we can now power the proton pack and the whole thing fits snugly but comfortably inside and out of view. :3

Sometime down the line I wanna snag a mod set that would let the power stay on without the pack idling after a few minutes, but I’m also not in a hurry to disassemble the pack again, so for now I’m happy with my work! :D If nothing else, I think @tracyhedgefox.bsky.social and I are definitely earning our mad scientist titles. :P

When I was a kid we spent time out at my mom's boss's ranch on a lake. My brother had one of those super soakers with the heavy duty backpacks, I had the standard super soaker 50. You'd think he'd have the edge, but I hooked mine up to a water hose and ran him up a tree with unlimited ammo.
