for those of you wondering what's different between these qr codes (this animation doesn't go up to version 40 tho, it only goes up to 8)

the "sound" ones are
* "version" i.e. its size in pixels, raw data capacity (40 versions)
* "level" i.e. its degree of error correction and fault tolerance (4 levels)
* "mask" or masking pattern (8 masks)
and the unsound thing is, the message data in a qr code is basically formatted like a series of containers of character encodings: there's ASCII (256 chars, 8 bits/char), alphanumeric (45 chars, 11 bits/2 chars), and numeric (10 chars, 10 bits/3 chars)

and they go like, first a header token saying how many characters are in this segment, and then the encoded character tokens. normally the data in a qr code goes something like

what i'm doing is just inserting empty containers of 0 characters, so it's like

geogebra has a symbolic calculator that allows you to switch between an exact expression and a numerical approximation, and i somehow managed to confuse it into thinking 3/2 is the square root of 2

geogebra evaluating 2^x/(1+2^x) at 0.5 and -0.5. the ratio of those constants (0.58578… and 0.41421…) is given as both 3/2 and 1.41421…

yeah it looks awful right? but it does have a tripod screw hole on the back so you won't have to hold it with the mics plugged in. zoom makes the h4essential recorder too, which does have a much better design, but it seems slightly worse in terms of tech specs *and* slightly more expensive

my latest thing i want but have absolutely no reason to buy and i should not buy it: the zoom m4 field recorder, for recording forest sounds and stuff. it's really fascinating, it's just ~$200 but it's got 32-bit float recording and great preamps and mics that said i shall not and will not buy it

UPDATE: turns out i didn't need to do this because 2-color BMP files apparently store color in a bitwise format too 🙃 and no conversion is necessary this is some of the raw bit data from my example file. i went "AAAUUGHHH" out loud when i saw it
