My Australian Grass Tree, (Xanthorrhoea australis) pre & post trim. I've left the flower spike alone for now. Nobody knows how to trim the roots of a Grass Tree Bonsai, so when the time comes I'll document what & how I do it. But the plant is flourishing. #AustralianNativeBonsai
This is 2 years in on my Native Fig Forest project. 7 species. I trim them occassionally but I'm basically ignoring their shape outside the Strangler Fig (Ficus watkinsiana) which I arched accross the pot end to end with the long term hope of air roots 'strangling' the other figs.
If it were coming into spring, I would have went harder.
Here's my Blackbutt (Eucalyptus Pilularis) needing a hard trim. It's been in this small pot for about 5yrs & thriving so a trim will do it wonders. #AustralianNativeBonsai
I rescued this Gardenia (Augusta Magnifica) from a 30cm deep pot & have given it a new life as a Bonsai. I'm not sure how old it is. The exposed roots are my creation, it was only showing a trunk in the plastic pot. It will need a good prune in spring if it doesn't flower.
Here's an update on my Lord Howe Banyan (Ficus macrophylla subsp. columnaris) bonsai. At just 2yrs old, it's growth rate is phenomenonal. Whilst I've wired some branches, they are almost ready to go freestyle. A hard trim in Spring will lower leaf size & thicken the canopy. #AustralianNativeBonsai

I don't have many exotic trees as Bonsais but I have tried a Flakey Juniper (R) a Hinoki Cypress (L) & a prostrate Himalayian Conifer as a side hustle. So far so good.

My Black She-oak (Allocasuarina littoralis) is in flower (Male plants flower late winter and spring, their branchlet tips are crowded with rusty, dark brown flower spikes). It's thrived since I pruned it's roots about 3yrs ago.
My Cherry Surprise Lilly Pilly (Acmena smithii 'Cherry Surprise') started as 2 plants I twisted them together for the first 2yrs. Now by growing into each other, it only has one trunk. I intend to cut approx 15cm off the crown come spring. #AustralianNativeBonsai

My 3 miniature Small Leaf Figs (Ficus Obliqua) are all about to fruit again. [I'm using my many miniature Bonsais for an upcoming maintenance demonstration at Kirawee's Botanica Lane Nursery in a few weeks time]. Their fruit is often smaller than a match head. #AustralianNativeBonsais
