Little Fire currently at 950 acres (~380+ hectares), 10% containment. @calfire.bsky.social doing an amazing job! Red area shows a landscape barrier feom quarry/cement factory, reservoirs, & parks. Pleasanton had active Rx fires in Shadow Cliffs Rec Area this spring. www.fire.ca.gov/incidents/20...
As the Great Lakes & eastern seaboard experience ongoing smoke events from hundreds of actively burning Canadian wildfires, here are recent NASA and NOAA imagery showing smoke & fire locations. Smoke events will be likely to co-occur throughout the summer. Smoke, like 🔥, is a global issue.
Spent the morning in a creek with Gen Alpha and fossils from the Ordovician Period (505 to 438 million years ago).
It’s my favorite time of year for evening bike rides: Herds of pygmy goats eating fine fuels (dry grasses) ahead of the fire season.
Happy Earth Day from NASA Ames Research Center’s Earth Science Division.
Enjoying what’s left of the snow in the Sierras. Near Echo Summit, more than 2,000 meters asl. Early April should be peak snow pack.
Flying a kite 🪁 on the beach 🏖️ and running from the Pacific’s waves 🌊 with one of my favorite little people 👧🏼.
There is no I-50 or I-60. There are two-lane U.S. Routes 50 & 60, that existed before interstates were built. And an I-64. The real numbering system is even numbers go east to west, odd numbers go north to south. State, local, and federal roads.
A reminder for all my real Appalachians and KY hillbillies out there. 🎶“Which Side Are You On?” 🎶
Greenland basically covers the Great Plains of the central U.S., tip-to-tip from the southern border to the northern border.
Maps in Mercator projection are lying to you - about size. Greenland is not as big as the continent of Africa. Greenland could nicely fit Denmark & the other Nordics. Greenland could cover Québec, the Maritimes, & parts of Nunavut. Or approx. 1.2 Alaskas.
The International Methane Emissions Observatory methodology used by UNEP depends on a consortium of almost 12 satellites, from many different countries, different abilities to map accurately by area, location, and time. Robust approach with good actionable data. wedocs.unep.org/rest/api/cor...
Great Lakes states & provinces will have to get more serious about pollution, drinking water infrastructure, and cleanup/reclamation if current population levels are to be maintained, let alone growth due to a “climate haven” status. All the water in the world won’t matter if too polluted to drink.
At ~50 unread emails and preparations for tomorrow complete, I am “Sleepytime Bear” stage of logged off and ready to settle in for a cold, rainy night.
I’m down to <200 unread messages and think payroll for an entire NASA Division is squared away, so now I’m the “Cat saving a watermelon from drowning in a lake” level of brain function.
A real-time photo of me m, as I try to sort through and respond to 43 days of unread work emails.
I made Pineapple chess pie with layer of dark chocolate and marzipan on the bottom. It was my first time making this Southern favorite for the family (I generally cook more savory dishes from my family recipe book). Great flavors. Will not use Trader Joe’s pie crust again.
Inflation got me down to 1-2 pumpkins max currently, when previous years I was like:
My Sleepytime©️ ritual is old episodes of ‘Murder She Wrote’ and highly moisturized face, lips, and hands.
