It could be argued that I have too many mugs, but I clearly needed this one with skulls and flowers on it made by a local ceramic artist. Because coffee wakes you from the dead and spurs renewal
Went for a bike ride and the vibes were super green If you live in a New York brownstone, your house used to be here (see alt text)
Wanted to let y’all know about these Iron Druid stained glass bookmarks made by an artist in Canada: They’re licensed and I’m donating my proceeds to an Ottawa food bank. So if you order one, •you get a nifty bookmark •you support an artist •hungry peeps get to eat shorturl.at/eP0Tj
Seriously it’s Count Binface and Farage in this by-election, nobody else, and Clacton can do the funniest thing ever AND rid England of a poisonous man by electing Binface
Strain to remove some of that there pulp! You’ll have enough for two or three drinks. Pour over ice into a rocks glass and garnish, and KABLAM, you feel fancy. And spicy. At varying degrees, depending on how many peppers you threw in. Want booze? Toss booze into the blender. Enjoy! /3 end
It’s really just three ingredients in a blender and then you float soda water on top: •1 cup of frozen watermelon •1 cup of nonfrozen watermelon •juice of one lime •half or a whole jalapeño, don’t remove the seeds BLEND INTO AN ANGRY RED SLURRY 2/
Another summer drink—a mocktail to which you can add tequila if you wish: A SPICY WATERMELON THINGIE yeah that’s totally the name but you can call them something else if you want (Hell yeah my drinks are nonbinary) Ready to make one? LET’S GO 1/
You guys if you ever had a question about an oyster you can ask today in a couple of hours. I’m going to ask about Gary.
Here is the bestest summer drink. You can make it with zero-proof gin if you don’t do alcohol like me. It’s great either way. It *does* require sage simple syrup but you can make it easily and save whatever you don’t use for later. Are you ready to make a BLUEBERRY SAGACITY? 1/
Kimberly and I are visiting a cafe owned and operated by a Colombian family ahead of Colombia’s game against Switzerland today. Simply delicious stuff. Have you ever tried patacon baskets? They’re outstanding. And canela colombiana (in the mug)? Tastes like magic. This is Encanto cafe in Manotick.
Congratulations to @jomiles.bsky.social on the release of THE FINAL CHRONICLE OF YENEH! Absolutely wonderful story that I read in one sitting and I know you’ll love it! Grab it at your store or online today! You will support a small press and have a new favorite! hornedlarkpress.com/product/the-...
This is an interesting bit from the thread I did this morning on the scholarly work
I warned of this earlier: Gratuitous Taco Pics. Went out with some friends to the best place in Ottawa (Ay Wey!) and whoa dang. L-R: Suadero, cochinita pibil, and al pastor negro (which is a smokier version of al pastor).
Proof of work. Some cafe writing time, then tacos, then Canada in the World Cup. That’s a day. Warning: There will be gratuitous taco pics later
Good morning. Have an Osprey near the Rideau River that I took yesterday before all the thunderstorms. #birds
Happy Canada Day, should ye be happy to be in Canada. I sure am. Lots of room for improvement, of course—no place is perfect—but super grateful to be here.
Update: Whoa. This is my first Detroit style and I had no idea it was so thicc And that golden crust is crispy CHEESE The tavern style is a winner—y’all, I think I rolled a 5! Woohoo!
I just made very simple ground beef tacos on blue corn tortillas with chopped onion and cheese and a hot line of that salsa. Perfect, really—heat and flavour without debilitating pain.
Update: This is the local salsa. And the label has a VERY curious metric (seen on the left) called a**-to-mouth, with a graphic of a donkey farting flames. And in this case the ratio is 1.5 ass fires to one mouth. This science is new to me. Canadian breakthroughs, by golly
Oh my goodness, looky here! Melville’s insight into humanity in 1851 applies perfectly to the denial that Tromp voters are engaging in to avoid taking responsibility for electing the worst human ever 27/
Chap. 19 features a mysterious dude named Elijah—namesake of a Biblical prophet—who implies that they who ship out with Ahab are doomed. He also says that Ahab losing his leg was prophesied. This phrase got me laughing because I see people use it all the time, like @scottlynch78.bsky.social. 26/
Queequeg signs on to the Pequod next but it illustrates why anti-discrimination laws were necessary. Peleg & Bildad want “papers” that prove Queequeg has converted to Christianity. Their objections disappear when Queequeg demonstrates his competence. Peleg *wants* him to stay out of church then 25/
Two pics of the same blue jay in standard and floofy mode /5 end of pics that I got outside today
I’ve had a rough time with getting warblers to stand still long enough to get a pic this year, but I finally got one that’s at least mostly in focus with a bonus caterpillar in the beak! Plus a nice pic of a swallow 2/
Ok y’all I went outside to see the animals and they got seen! Special treat: THIS DEER, especially where she appear to be saying “Ermagherd, a human!” 1/
Got some pretty nifty pics at the bird sanctuary that I’ll share later. But we are chilling on the St Lawrence River now, looking across the water at New York.
I just liked this phrase because it sounds like it *could* be true, even though I doubt apple dumplings were around millennia ago. Oh, no. This is dangerous. Now I want to know when apple dumplings were invented. 24/
