I’m going to a Toadies show tonight after not really having thought about them since 2008’s No Deliverance. I honestly wondered if the front man Vaden Lewis had turned into some grumpy right-wing Texan and if I was making a mistake. Then I found this interview from April and I feel better.

"In Amarillo one night, we had one song left at this big outdoor festival type show," Lewis says. "So I took the moment to say 'I believe in women's rights, I believe in trans rights, and I believe you should be able to love who you love, so that's why I vote Democrat, and the whole crowd just turned on a dime, thousands of people just hating my guts as we played that last song."

Looks like Malaprop's has one on hand. Instead of trying to fit all this into a single post I'll just screenshot my review from Goodreads (no spoilers obviously).

This is one of the most fascinating, dreamlike, engrossing, repulsive, and enthralling books I've ever read. I was hooked from page 9 onwards, sometimes unsure what I was reading. always certain I had no idea where the story was going.

This was horror in a way that I've never seen before. There were no jump scares, no creepy crawlies. Sections of this book were horrific in the same way that photojournalism from war zones is. Dispassionate is the only way I can think to describe it. I would not be surprised to find that Enriquez deliberately chose which passages would be in third person (versus the few that were in first person) and left the most monstrous of scenes there so that we wouldn't be treated to characters' descriptions of what they were seeing or their emotions about it.

This was a cold, cold, book. A knife of a book. Enriquez's descriptions of the supernatural were detailed and unlike anything I've ever read, in great part because they were so clinical - and yet somehow she kept some mystery there. She revealed just enough that reading it felt like flashes from a bad dream, desaturated. I don't know how descriptions of the woods at night, with splashes of hot blood, can seem so colorless with the exception of gleaming golden claws.

Fascinating book. Absolutely horrific.

Just finished The Thousand Crimes of Ming Tsu by @tom-lin.bsky.social. Absolutely incredible that this is his first novel. Tightly wound, driving, hot, full of blood and mystery and death. I can not wait to see what he writes next.

In the past few days here in Asheville I’ve seen turkeys, rabbits, owls, hawks, bears, and had to evict both a black rat snake and a tiny field mouse from my house. The most wildlife I’d see on the regular in New Orleans was cockroaches and bayou rats. I’ll take this trade.

Well this is a new one. Filling out a form at a doctor’s office and the “what language do you speak?” form has an absolutely fantastic list of options. I have no idea where the website dev or whoever sourced this list but damn. Way to look out for the occasional 4,000 year old Elamite revenant.
